As usual, I do not know where to start. I never know how to put into words my amazing experiences. How can I write the things I see into words when no words can do it justice.
Picked up at the airport by our hotel - the wee man holding a sign saying LAURA JOYCE actually about made me pee my pants haha - it was humid as hell! Although we were also profusely sweating because 2 guys came and took our luggage and marched off with it. I said I think they are porters but that small feeling inside me made me think s***E THEY ARE CUSTOMS AND THEY WANT TO TAKE US AWAY. But thankfully, they were just porters and they wanted tipped haha. So everyone beware, have your cash ready as its custom to tip in Bali.
So we get dropped off at our wee Groupon hotel (yes Groupon, we found a deal and thought go for it). Everyone stays in big swanky resorts and this wasn't going to be one of them so I was nervous. And I shouldn't have been. They upgraded us to a full apartment with built in kitchen and your door leading to the pool (so if you felt really tired one day all you had to do was throw yourself down the stairs from your bed and roll into the pool! Sorted!). It was an extremely small place called the Devata Suites but now I am home and I look back, I am so so so happy we done it this way our first time round. It was hard to get our bearings; it was strnge being in a foreign country with a different culture and currency again and we weren't prepared for it at all. We were in Seminyak - as we were advised it was the best place to stay - but you still couldn't really walk anywhere as theres no pavements. And the roads…. My god. There should be reality show on that s***. MENTAL. Absolutely indescribable. Going round a roundabout in Bali had to be up there with one of the most bizarre, scary and ridiculous scenes I have ever witnessed in my life.
Taxis are cheap but you MUST ask for the meter before you get in. On that note, stick with Blue Bird taxis. We got ripped off once. But don't tar everyone with the same brush, as my mum had this lovely wee guy waiting on them everywhere they went one day (she didn't ask nor expect him to do that) but he was happy to make sure they got around safely.
Once we did get our bearings (basically by getting in a taxi and asking for the beach) we used that drop off point as the basis for the rest of our holiday. This helped TONNES. Right next to the Anantara Resort - we sunbathed there the first day where we got charged around $10 each for sunbeds. But later in the week we walked further along where we walked past Cocoon Beach Club and La Plancha and found sunbeds for half that!
Its not a white sandy beach, theres a lot of rubbish - it's a 3rd world country. But you will witness the most beautiful sunset you will ever clap eyes on.
We spent 2 amazing nights at the Taris (On the left of Anantara resort) beach bar, sat on giant bean bags with funky umbrellas, eating gorgeous food (Indonesian food for $4!!! That's £2!) drinking amazing cocktails watching sunsets. Out of this world. The staff there were amazing.
We went to a place called Mano's Bar for the sunset one night too which was a lot more open as it sat behind the beach and had no trees or umbrellas in way of the view. We sat there drinking cocktails all night between 4 of us and it came to $100 (£50). Although the mosquitos were out in force but the staff did provide repellent. We also went to an amazing spa called the Sundari Spa - amazing! We done the Couples package which involved a body scrub, full body massage and spa bath. But not any spa bath - filled with rose petals and handed big massive coconut drinks. Honestly, the most amazing experience ever. For someone who doesn't know how to relax (me) it totally chilled me out. If I could have moved in there I would have. We also got manicures and pedicures - we were there for 5 hours and it cost $180 - £90!!!!!!! NONSENSE!
All in all, to sum up this holiday - outsanding and I got to experience it with my mum, Stephen and Ryan too. Leaving to go back to the reality I have to face is going to be incredibly difficult. Bali - I f***ing love you!
