Liz's Travels
Hi!
We arrived in Ho Chi Minh City on 20th after flying from Hoi An. Saigon is much bigger than the other towns/cities we have been to in Vietnam. The population is officially 6.5 million, but they reckon its closer to 8 million, and in order to move there you have to have permission from the government as it is sooooo over populated!
The rain had let up for a bit and so we explored the town and had dinner in the night markets. Snail and frog were on the menu (French influence!) but I couldn't bring myself to try it!
The next day we visited the Cuchi tunnels which were built for the second world war but used by the Viet Cong when fighting the US. We got to crawl through the tunnels, and although they had been widened for us fat westerners, they were still very cramped, dark and hot. Cannot imagine what it must have been like to live in them for any length of time. I also got the chance to fire an AK47 which was pretty cool, although on automatic its also pretty powerful!!
It was quite a lighthearted morning learning about the war, but then we went to the National War Museum in Saigon which really shattered us all I think. Its all the pictures and stories they don't tell you about in school and it really haunts you. The cruelty and aggression used in the war is portrayed through pictures and we also saw a video on the thousands of agent orange victims still suffering. Yet you see them on the street and they are all really friendly and just making the best of what they have.
Our guide fought in the Vietnam war, but when he was in hospital for a gun wound he decided he couldn't face going back...so cut off his own finger!
A very interesting time in Saigon, a place I would love to go back to as we only had very little time there. Now its back on the bus again to head into Cambodia...
