Europe 2006
Hi Everyone,
We just got back from 5 days in Scotland (we being Danni, Todd, Cathy, Garth and I) we had a great time, Scotland is definitely one of my favourite places so far.
We started with a night in Edinburgh. We found our hostel and Todd eventually got over the fact that the dorm rooms were single sex and he had to share with two boys that had been living in there for 6 weeks and had managed to take over the entire room, actually I still don't think he has fully recovered! We then went for a stroll around Edinburgh before settling on a location for dinner and a pub quiz. Our team (named Napoleon Dynamite) managed to second last but we won the bonus round and that's all that matters!
We then walked Garth to his hotel via some fibreglass bulls, which we of course climbed all over to take photos. We later found out that the bulls were a part of an art exhibition - whoops!
The next morning our tour of the highlands began with a mix up in buses which meant we left about an hour and half late:@( Once on the bus we had trouble getting out of Edinburgh because there was parade on and they had blocked off a lot of the streets - we got out eventually though. The day was spent driving through the highlands and to the Isle of Skye. We stopped all the time at nice places such as Loch Ness (nessie must have been on Holidays though) and other various Castles, mountains and Lochs.
Once in Isle of Skye, we went to our hostel and after a fight over rooms with a rude group of Spaniards we settled into our room and then headed out for dinner at one of three pubs where we were staying - you may not think this is strange but after living in London where there is always about 10 within walking distance - this felt strange. After dinner we walked to another pub called Saucy Mary's (named after the Princess who used to live on the Island, who would reward ships for paying the correct amount of tax by flashing her boobies). There was a band playing there, with an 11 year old playing the bongos! There was also a group of navy boys in fancy dress, we "some how" ended up with one of there paper mache heads by the end of the night!! We had a really good night there and then headed to bed (a little bit too loudly according to our neighbours on either side of our room - lucky it was only the tour guide and a group of kiwi's!)
The hostel at Skye was probably the best I have stayed in. It reminded us of staying at Grandma's.
We spent the next day exploring the Isle of Skye, we climbed a mountain, went to Castles, Lochs and Churches again. My favourite place for the whole trip was a glen where everything was small compared to the rest of the mountains. The locals believe that the spot is magic and that if you go there and think about whatever is troubling you, when you leave you will leave your problems behind. People have left a lot of bits and pieces there - like clothes, photos and money. There was also a little cave that you could climb up to, it only fit one person at a time and when you were inside it the walls sparkled.
That night we cooked ourselves dinner (Danni and Todd's first home cooked meal in weeks) and went to Saucy Mary's again - this time the band was two girls and one of them was only 15. They were ok, we had an early night though.
The next day we drove back to Edinburgh, stopping at the grave of Rob Roy, the Wallace Monument and some other pretty places.
It was a really good tour, the best one I have done. If anyone is going to Scotland I recommend it. It was the Macbackpackers 3 day Isle of Skye tour - hahaha - do you think I should go and work for them??
After this we headed to Glasgow. We went out dancing on the first night after rudely being shuffled out of a Chinese Restaurant. It was a really fun night, Cathy and I managed to rip our jeans, there was handstands and tackling on the dance floor and some dance offs. Cathy pushed a little man so hard he nearly fell over - ahahahah!!
The next day we didn't feel like being in a city so we caught the train out to Loch Lomond and relaxed by the water.
As far as Glasgow itself goes, the less said the better. It reminded me of Parramatta with more teenage mothers and bad fake tans.
On that note - Bye bye!!
**This was a really long entry but don't get used to it! I doubt I will have the internet time once I am officially "on the road"
***Next destination is Barcelona on 26th June - stay tuned!!
