Lisa's Big Adventure
Relaxing in the Greek Islands - Mykonos
After an overnight stop in Athens, we departed very early the following morning (try 6am!) to get down to the ferry that would take us to the lovely island of Mykonos. After a six hour ferry ride with the "ferry police" - they wouldn't let us lie on the seats, put our feet up or even sleep on the floor, we arrived in the port of Mykonos. Here our group was separated into 3 separate hotels, located about 5 - 10 minutes walk apart from each other. I was staying in the Hotel K, located high up the hill with a marvellous view of the water. It was a lovely hotel, all white with a fantastic pool. I didn't really take in much of the scenery on the way up in the mini van as I was too busy fearing for my life - those Greek drivers are crazy! However, when we got out of the van, I was able to take in the white buildings on the hill and to see the phenomenal view of the blue, blue water. Our room was quite nice and from our window, we could see the water, framed by white buildings. So far, it was living up to my impressions of what a Greek Island should be.
The remaining few hours of the afternoon were spent lying by the pool and then in the spa for a while - as the pool was too cold. While the sun was very hot, the wind seemed to just whip through the area, a common thing in Mykonos apparently. It was then time to get ready for dinner and head down to the crossroads where we would meet the rest of the tour group. Ali gave us a quick orientation around the town and then left us to find dinner, showing us the bar where we would be meeting later on for some cocktails. We found a lovely restaurant that overlooked the water and proceeded to order fabulous food. This time I went for, yes, tzatziki and also the traditional mousaka - which was absolutely divine! The waiters were great and made the meal very enjoyable also. We then met up back at the Scandi bar and had a few cocktails and a chat before heading back to bed.
Woke up late, missing breakfast but unfortunately I wasn't feeling particularly well - no, not from the alcohol. The dreaded flu had hit me again so I took the opportunity to spend all day lying by the pool, reading my book and sleeping. It wasn't a waste of a day as I'd said that I wanted to lie by the water in the Greek Islands and I did - I just had the view of the sea to my left and the pool right in front of me. Had dinner at the hotel with a few of the girls as there were a few like me who weren't feeling well and crashed early.
Made it to breakfast the following morning and then headed into town for some browsing and shopping before the shops closed for siesta after lunch. Niki came with me and I got my first real good look at the island. It was exactly as I'd pictured a Greek Island to look with the white houses, blue water and then the barren land. Very picturesque. There were no blue doors or roofs thought as I'd seen in pictures but I believe that is more Santorini. The little town had lots of shops and I had great fun wandering around and searching for prints of the island. Finally found some and then Niki and I went searching for jewellry for her. Returned to the hotel mid afternoon and spent the next few hours once again lying by the pool. That night walked back into town and went to dinner at the same restuarant as the first night before going for a few more cocktails.
We didn't leave Mykonos on the ferry until 2pm the last day so the morning was spent at the pool again before we headed down to the docks for the lovely 6 hour ferry ride back to Athens.
Mykonos was just wonderful and while I didn't really get to explore the island much, it was just what I needed. I will definately be heading back to the Greek Islands to do a bit of an island hop at a later date.
