We ventured out for the evening on Wednesday for dinner and to take a few photos. We only got 10 yards from the hotel before a local police man/security guard told us not to use our tripod unless we had a license!!! So our plans of a quality night photo of the Burj Khalifa (the world’s largest building) were blown out the water. We have never heard so much rubbish but didn’t fancy an argument.
The evening was very humid and a little uncomfortable, but we managed to find a nice restaurant (with a fan) in the Old Town of Dubai and stayed there for the evening eating Lebanese food.
We were both really tired due to the late night flight, and not sleeping the night we left for the travelling, so we decided to go back to the room at 1am. We were woken by the maid banging on the door at 10:30am so we obviously needed the sleep!
Thursday we sat around the pool for just over an hour, did a lot of swimming and also used the gym. Mark needs to burn off those pounds!
Afterwards we hopped on the hotel’s shuttle bus service to take us to the Mall of the Emirates (another huge shopping mall). When we got there we were really impressed with the indoor Ski Slope we had heard about. That said, who has a ski slope in a shopping mall?
Following this, we decided to jump in a taxi to take us to the new Atlantis Hotel on the Palm (the one Kylie Minogue say at when it opened). We walked inside and found it was a little impersonal. The hotel is massive, set in huge grounds, has an massive aquarium, many restaurants and bars, and a water park. With prices from £450 a night we are not surprised it has all this! Had a drink outside but the air was pretty humid. This probably explains why Mark drank two drinks in as many minutes.
Later in the evening we sat in our hotel’s late night bar and spoke to family and friends on Skype and also did a little surfing for our next trip to Krabi, Thailand. The plan is for a further trip to Phi Phi island and then on to Phuket to meet Mark’s work friend, Ali. The extra flights to Krabi are now booked and we go on 15th June (after spending time in Bangkok).
On Thursday, we chilled out for a couple of hours around the hotel and then during the evening we went up the world’s largest tower (Burj Khalifa). It was absolutely awesome. We walked around the viewing floor and took some great photos/ video camera footage. We were only allowed up to the 124th floor and the lift didn’t feel like it moved one bit!
Every half an hour outside the Dubai shopping mall (by the Burg Khalifa) there is the most amazing water fountain display. Everyone gathers around to watch the fountain; it’s crazy but an awesome scene. It’s about a 10 minute display to music. As you would expect from Dubai, it is the world’s largest fountain !!
Tomorrow we fly to Bangkok and will continue to update you on our travels in Thailand.
Take care everyone. Xx
Lisa & Mark
