I absolutely loved Phnom Penh! The city itself was a bit dirty & I don't think it was very safe - lots of drug dealers come out at night & they're not shy about it but it wasn't a problem because there was a big group of us. But there's so much to do & I easily could've stayed a week but I hated my room - full of lizzards & things & the water stopped so i couldn't shower or run the tap. Also I wanted to get to the beach again!
The first day me & Kris went to the S21 prison & the Killing Fields. The prison was awful, it used to be a school before the Khmer Roughe took over & started the revolution. It was the place everyone was detained & tortured before going to the killing fields. They still have all the equipment used to torture their victims as well as photographs of them. There were still bloody hand prints on the walls & blood spatter on the ceiling. Mug shots were taken of the victims & they are all around the prison, sometimes with a short biography.
When we got to the Killing Fields at first I was suprised how peaceful & tranquil it was there. It's sort of a massive garden with a lake. But as you walk around, you start to see horrible things. There are still clothes sticking out of the ground from the shallow graves & there are piles of bones & teeth. Then you get to a big glass tower & in the glass tower are 8000 skulls of just a few of the victims. We bought some flowers & lit some insence. I have photographs but it's not for the faint hearted.
The second day was much more happier! I visited the orphanage. There are many you can visit but some are more advertised than others so they get more help & I wanted to go to one that was less publicised. I was pleasantly suprised! There were 8 orphans that lived there & about 30 children that came from the surrounding villages for free english lessons. It is good for them to learn english because they have better career prospects when they are older. They are well looked after even though it is a tiny place. They are all so happy & we were playing games with them & we had a talcum powder fight! I even taught an English lesson which i was terrified of but they loved it & we taught them some songs. I wanted to buy a big bag of rice to give but I couldn't carry it so I made a donation instead. It turned out to be the same orphanage that Johnny spent a week in & he helped build an extension on the back - his picture was on the wall! Small world! The kids were great & the owner is hoping that soon they will be able to afford to take in more orphans. I fell in love with a baby boy named Chung Long, don't think i could've smuggled him through customs though.
I arrived in Sihanoukville today - another beach place! I tried to upload some pics from Saigon but it took so long to put on a few that I gave up - I'll try again tomorrow.
