The night before arriving in Phnom Penh was really cool, we stayed in Chau Doc and took motorbikes to the top of the mountain to watch the sunset. We had to go through tiny villages where everyone waved at the tourists on bikes. My driver ran out of petrol so stopped at a gas station which meant that we were miles behind everyone else and had to catch them up and super fast speed (at least fifty mph) We went up Mount Sam which has views over the Vietnam/Cambodian border. A beer or 2 later and the sun had set through a glorious range of colours. There are photos uploaded, but they can't really replicate the true experience you get with your own eyes.
The border crossing into Cambodia was fine, just a six hour boat journey. Daniel, the tour leader summed it up the best 'we are in Cambodia- and relax' he was spot on, not as many noisy motorbike horns, much more laid back. I have enjoyed the city alot more than I expected. The Tuc Tucs are the best, much better than the cyclos and motos. We used a tuctuc to go to a restaurant we read about in the lonely plant which serve fish and chips-sad I know. But we just needed comfort food after the past few weeks. We spent the first night having drinks and chilling out.
We spent a morning visiting S21- a former prison under the regime of the Kymer Rouge and Pol pot. It used to be a secondary school and you could see how they had transformed it into an awful prison. Afterwards we went to the killing fields, which was an experience. I think it helped us to understand the people and the country alot more. Something like 40% of the country''s population is under the age of 15 because of the number of people killed. It is shocking to think that it was not that long ago.
Tomorrow we have a short plane ride (about 35 mins) to Siem Reap to see the temples.
Missing everyone xxx
