So I arrived in LA a little disorientated after a ten hour flight but actually going back 21 hours in time, very odd! I said bye to my friends and got in a shuttle to take me to the hostel. It was only me and the driver and he offered to take me to see the Santa Monica Pier and Venice Beach. I thought this was a good opportunity, as I only had 2 days here so I didn't know how much I'd get to see myself. He drove along and showed me but I couldn't be bothered to get out too much. Then it was all a bit weird when he asked if I wanted to get something to drink and some good etc. This man was about 60 so I'd figured it was all innocent and he was being friendly but he kept saying how he was alonely single guy and asked when he'd next see me! All a bit odd but I made it to the hostel ok so it was all fine.
I checked in and USA Hostel Hollywood is really nice if anyone's looking for a hostel there. Probably more expensive than I'd been paying in other places but I figured it was only 2 nights. I had a wander of Hollywood Boulevard. It was all very hectic and I was tired so people trying to sell stuff/talk to me was a bit too much but it was fascinating all the same. Then I decided I should stay up till bedtime so I went to the cinema, on my own, for the first time ever! I saw the Ghost Writer which was actually really good. Then stopped for a Happy Meal (I've never had so many McDonald's since I've been away) and went to bed.
The next morning I'd booked a tour to see the Hollywood sign and the celeb homes. So I got there at 11am but they said it had been a slow day and they were waiting for more people so could I come back at 12. This was annoying but I guess one of the letdowns of going for a cheaper company. So I wandered off, came back and there was still no one else to do the tour. I chatted to one of the guys (a struggling actor) who was the tour guide and he said he'd take me around to the see the sign and then we'd come back and see if they'd found anyone else. So I had my own personal tour of the sign and the various surroundings. It's so weird seeing where so many clips of films have been fillmed etc! I saw the playground from the Grease scene for example.
I got a few photos of the sign and then we headed back. They said I could head off for a bit of lunch while they still struggled to find more people (apparently it was an unusually quiet day). I had some lunch, came back and luckily they'd found another 3 couples so we set off. We saw Sunset Hills, Beverly Hills and loads of celebrity homes, such as Michael Jackson, Keanu Reeves, Drew Barrymore etc etc. It was really quite unteresting, although many of them you couldn't see much of past the door.
After that, I had a bit of a wnader of the shops and then headed back to the hostel where I met up with the 2 guys from the Kiwi bus. We had a bit of a wander, went for an In and Out Burger, which was a disappointment after the Fergburger and then went to the comedy night at the hostel which was really good fun.
The next morning I had to leave early for a shuttle bus for my flight to Vancouver so that was the end of my spell in LA. It would've been nice to stay a bit longer and go on a bit of a road trip but I figure I should leave something else to do :)
