After spending a night in the delights of San Pedro Sula, we upped and left early the next day to catch the bus to our boat bound for Belize. When we got there we almost couldn´t believe our eyes... Our $55 ride across an ocean turned out to be a glorified rowing boat, with 2 engines attached! On discovery that we hadn´t been to immigration, this guy offered to give us a lift, slapping the trunk of his pick-up truck - we were about to become the people we´d spent the last 7 weeks laughing at for their foolishness! It was actually quite fun, although horrifically dangerous zooming down the motorway at 60mph just chilling out on a box (sorry parents!).The actual boat ride turned out to be pretty dark; Alice was sandwiched between a madman who kept singing and standing up who smelled like poo, and a woman who was throwing up for the duration of the 4-hour journey into bags amd then holding them... I was seated on a backless bench (comfy) and a boy threw up at my feet. Money well spent then!
And to cloudy Caye Caulker we made it (on Tuesday 16th) - boo at the former and yay at the latter! It was undeniably nice though - so relaxed things almost moved backwards (we did wait 45 mins for a coffee, but that´s pretty much the norm). There are no paved roads on the island, and about 1 car and 1 golf buggy, plus white sand everywhere (and I mean everywhere - no bars or restaurants have floors, just sand!), fringing mangroves, turqouise water... If only the sun had been out!
Wednesday dawned cold and rainy, and a mysterious smell reminiscient of festival toilets swept the hostel encouraging nausea and/or vomitting, which was excellent on all accounts. The problem we discovered with Caye Caulker, is that when it´s cloudy and cold there ain´t so much to do! We weren´t able to do our snorkelling trip either which was a shame - you go to shark and ray alley (hopefully not becoming lunch), and can stroke a sharks tummy! We ended up leaving Belize on Thursday and headed north, which ended up working out fabbily giving us two full weeks in Mexico, excellent news!
