Our third city in Thailand and one that has really shown us the true culture of the country. It's nice to be away from the hustle and bustle of Bangkok and seeing a city with such a great history. The city is split into two halves, the new and old cities. The new city is still being modernised and combines the usual market stalls and shops you expect from a modern Thai city. But across the main bridge over the river and a bus journey away is what Sukhothai used to be over 2000 years ago. We explored all the ruins of the temples and architecture that span a massive area, some on small islands and some on main land. We rented bikes to explore the old city as it would have knackered us out even more to walk all the time in the 35 degree heat!
The place we have stayed in Sukhothai has also been the bst so far. It's a small resort just outside the new city but it's absolutely beautiful. Lovely wooden cabins, very clean rooms and great places to eat and talk to other travellers. The staff are unbelievably friendly and it's almost like staying with a family. It will be a shame to leave but a 5 hour (minimum!) bus journey awaits to Chiang Mai where we will be exploring the city as well as trekking the jungles that surround it!
