We landed in Melbourne, Australia around 10 am. Hurray!
We'd rented a white, Toyota, 4 door Corolla for our trip down the Great Oceans Road. Despite being a little bleary eyed, Barry did a great job driving on the left hand side of the road. The windshield wipers were our signal lights a lot of the time, but the drivers were forgiving and the roads were nice and wide, unlike our Scotland experience so it wasn't too bad.
We stopped several times just to keep awake, shocked each time by how cold it was (20 degrees Celsius); after all, we were in Australia. In the middle of summer! We thought it would be cooking hot but it wasn't. The other annoyance was that each time we got out we were swarmed by a million flies! It was really gross, so even though the scenery was breathtaking we couldn't really enjoy it fully.
We stopped at Bell's Beach - one of Australia's most famous surfing beaches - where we checked out a beautiful view of the wild waves and turquoise water. Another walk brought us to the Split Point Lighthouse - or the "White Queen" as she's affectionately known. A few other lookouts along the way also broke up the drive.
