We awoke to beautiful sunny skies, so we decided we would hit the beach. We ate a simple but pleasing breakfast of cereal and toast at the hostel. Then we borrowed some bodyboards from our hostel and headed down to Bar Beach.
It was a very popular beach, evident by the crowds of people. We noticed that the gigantic waves were crashing right at the shoreline - the type of waves Tessa does not like! However, we were all anxious to jump into the water because of the intense heat - all of us, that is, but Margaret. She got nice and comfy in her tanning position while Barry and Tessa headed down to the ocean, trailing Connor by a few meters. Connor was struck by a wave immediately, which soaked him. He popped his head up in delight, laughing as more waves hit him. Barry joined Connor in getting buffeted by large waves, but Tessa went out deep enough to avoid the waves. After about ten minutes, she ran and got her bodyboard and began floating up and down the waves. Connor followed suit and they both attempted to ride some waves but it was close to impossible, as the waves were not breaking until the shoreline. Barry, on the other hand, rode the best bodysurfing wave of his life! He swam back out to Tessa and Connor after his amazing ride and everyone agreed to take a break and slowly head inland.
Suddenly, Connor spotted a huge wave and yelled out to Barry to catch it. Without noting how close he was to the shore, Barry leapt forward, catching the wave with ease. Moments later, however, he felt himself falling as the wave threw him onto the beach. He landed heavily on his head and shoulder and for a moment actually feared he had broken his neck. Searing pain down his right side left him immobilized for a few moments and he fought to control and assess the pain. After alternating between walking it off and laying down, he said he could probably drive. The family thought a visit to the doctor was in order, but Barry said we should have some lunch and figure things out from there, so we went back to the hostel and had sandwiches. After that, Barry decided he was OK to drive, so we loaded up and headed for Sydney.
