An early start to the day so we could get to Roma to watch the cattle sales - they're only on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We arrived by 11.30am, and whilst the sales had finished, the were weighing in the last of the cows and then loading them onto the trucks - one of the farmers chatted to us, and was very happy with some of the prices he got for his cattle- a total of 2,200 cattle were in the pens today. Very pleased we made the effort to get here!
We dropped into the Big Rig information centre and had a really nice lunch while considering our options for the next few days - we decided to stay here in Roma tonight and head to the Gold Coast tomorrow. The temperature was heading into the high 30's so we checked into the Big Rig Caravan Park, set up and went straight to the pool - it was a bit warm, but better than nothing!
Around 4pm we went back to the Big Rig, and spent an hour at the Oil Patch - an outside display of oil and gas exploration and production equipment. It's self-guided and includes lots of signs and audio panels, oil equipment, trucks, etc and finishes with a great little video explaining how oil and gas is found and extracted.
Low on supplies, we did a big grocery shop and it was still so hot, we dropped into the Northern Hotel for a cold drink. Back at the campground we unpacked the car and quickly made our way back to the Big Rig for the Night Show at 7.30pm - we sat in an open-air 'theatre' which has an open set depicting a basic tent camp typical of oil drilling in the 1920's - some tents, two small drilling rigs and other stuff normally seen around a rig of that era. A large projection screen is raised behind the set. Commentary was throughout the show, backed up by images on the screen. There were lighting effects and a couple of smoke machine moments. An entertaining 32 minutes - whilst it was the same information we learned going through the Oil Patch earlier, Renee & Eamon enjoyed and understood this better.
