hellllllooooo.
Well we made it up the Big hill called Haast pass but we did have to get off the bike and walk as some parts were just sooo steep and we do not have low enough gears for it!!! But we stuck at it. We seen some touring holiday cyclist that had a pick up car which they all got in to get dropped off at the top of the hill - Cheaters!!! They had no panniers but they still got a lift to the top!!! Well when we got the top of the hill we seen a tandem that had just been dropped off at te top and we cycled straight passed them and zoomed down the hill on the other side over taking at 49.8mph!!! that was the best feeling ever!!hahaha So in total we done 49.59 miles where we met sooooo many other cyclist camping in the same place. we went to the pub and chilled there for a bit.
5/3 - 41.32 miles to Wanaka we had a tail wind all day which was fantastic!! although it was still a tough day we were almost getting pushed up the hills at times!! both of our legs were tired.
6/3 - had a load of drunking teenagers screaming and shouting last night which was not good as we both woke up really sleepy having being woken up sooooo much!! We had decided to have a rest day and book in to a cabin for one night as the weather was planned to be heavy rain!. whivh would you believe started as soon as we were nice and warm in the cabin at 12.30pm!!!
7/3 - Great night sleep last night. still raining which is not too good! however we still went along with plans that we were leaving to get on the bike. rain still going so we decided to stay another night as we knew that the weather was clearing and we would have a tail wind instead of a head!!! So we booked another night in the cabin and went indoor climbing at a place not far from the campsite and spent most of the day in there. It was such a good day we both done top rope and tried lots of different routes. forearms were killing at the end of the day! We then went to the shops and bumped in to the German couple who had sent the bikes home and decided to get a car for the last few weeks....but it was sooo cool to see them again. They told us that the Dutch couple tyse and Barbara had an accident...... Barabra fell off her bike as she got them caught in the train rails and knocked herself out!!!!! she is ok but it must have been horrible for them with the baby. (judy and john from the golden owl..... if your reading this yes it is the same people who stayed with you.... we caught up with them hahaha)
8/3 - 50.48 miles to Queentowns We cycled the highest tar sealed road in New zealand today!! It was such a hard day although it was a gradual climb it got really steep at the top and again we had to get off and walk which i found even harder to do at times. I got quite ill at one point and felt like i was going to drop because i had not ate much so jonny came to my rescue with lots of choccy and biscuits. my goodness i felt sooo much better. Arrived at queenstown at 7pm so it was a long day.
9/3 - today we got the 12pm old steamer TSS EARNSLAW boat to Walter peak which takes you on to a gravel road. We got there at 1pm and had to cycle 52 km to the doc campsite which is basically classed as wild camping. It was hard setting off so late but great to not have any cars on the road. we were in the middle of nowhere. we bumped in to Kybi who is Slovakian and been on the road for two years cycled all the way from his home town to china and oz and nz in total he has done 33,000km wow!!!! we ended up cycling with him and staying at the same place sharing stories. We camped near the lake where we had to have a wash and drink the water from a stream..... that came out yellow....mmm...i wonder what that could be???? This was a really good day. i got stung by a wasp/bee for the first time ever and started to panick as i was unsure if i was allergic or not....all was ok!!
10/3 - we stayed at the lake today and it was just me and jonny in the middle of nowhere with not many people around.....magic!
11/3 - left quite late but it was all down hill and we had a tail wind to start with. The road was a lot worse this way there was lots of gravel and lots more pot holes, jonny had to keep shouting them out to me as i cant see them. As soon as we reached the sealed road we then had to cycle into the wind was made the last bit drag!! 43.10miles total to Te Anau which is the wettest place in New Zealand. great!!!hahha
12/3 - today we booked a kayaking trip for tomorrow to Milford Sound. so we have to be up and ready for 6.30am tomorrow which should be fun. We are both looking forward to this. we would have cycled there but there is a tunnel called Homer tunnel that had no lights and is a 1 in 10 graident which we would be fine going down but not going up!!! so we will sit on a bus and then kayak the sound. weather not looking too good though.... we'll see
Hope everyone is well it is great to hear from you all.... keep those messages coming
Take care and we send lots of love and kisses all the way from NZ xxx
