After breakfast we had to do the usual triathlon rituals, check out the notice board at the team hotel and go and register. Fortunately we are so well located both venues are a few minutes walk away. Registration was not open so we decided to head off to Lisbon city centre and come back in the afternoon for Graham to register. The Metro train is very fast and with only four lines red, yellow, green and blue, it is quite easy to negotiate. We went to the centre of the city and wandered through the narrow streets and climbed up lots of steps to get to the Castle, the most visited of Lisbon's attractions. It is very popular because the walks around the walls and ramparts give you the best views over Lisbon. On the way down we discovered the elevator which would have saved our legs on the way up. We spent the day covering most of the tourists spots on foot, seeing the quaint buildings, squares, the palaces, gondolas, trams, gardens and even managed to sit down for lunch. The city is very hilly and we did lots of climbing up steps and then finding an elevator that we could have used, but we needed to burn off the calories from Lisbon custard tarts. There are some very nice pastry shops here . We returned back to our apartment by late afternoon and Graham registered and went out for a quick run around the triathlon route . An evening stroll along the sea front and around the triathlon course before it was time to rest my weary legs.
