We had a leisurely start to the day and gradually packed up and bade farewell to Irene and Gerry knowing we probably would not see their house in France again. As lovely as it is the steep steps and drive are not so practical for those in their eighties and nineties and they I'll probably have to move soon.
We hit the motorway and then turned off towards Le Puys which took us through hilly, windy roads , the scenery was lovely but it was quite a long journey. We eventually arrived and I could not really see what was so special about this place. We found the campsite on the edge of town where the unusual volcanic outcrops stood with medieval buildings perched on the top. Another had a huge statue overlooking the town. In the evening sunshine they really looked stunning. We wandered into town and explored the ancient streets and Cathedral, the buildings were really beautiful and there were spectacular views over the town.
As it was Bastille day the town was full, the families were all waiting for the fireworks at 11pm but we weren't sure we're the best place was to see them. We headed back towards our campsite and saw the fireman shutting the roads around the volcanic outcrops so our camp, site was on the right side of town for viewing. This was confirmed as we got near the campsite and everyone was finding their spot right outside our campsite. We made a quick drink and grabbed our camping chairs to join the locals on the roadside. Wow! Do the French celebrate Bastille Day ! I
