So we got up early on Wednesday morning ready for our trip to the supposed paradise island of Rottnest. The sun was not shining and there was a troubling amount of black clouds and wind about as we waited to board the ferry. Once aboard we set off for a gentle sail down the Swan river which runs through Perth. We arrived at Freemantle event free and the ferry filled up with passengers. As we pulled out the captain announced we may feel a bit of wind on the way across so the journey would get a bit bumpy. Massive bloody understatement! The cabin crew went around handing out sick bags and I tried to sleep on Lee until I realised he was about to barf. We both tried to get out on to the deck at the top of the boat however the height of the waves meant the boat kept crashing down and so some lucky people ended up with us in their laps as we made our way through. At this point Lee had turned literally green which I actually didn't think was possible before. After a while up on deck with the wind assaulting our faces and the occasional wave crashing over our backs we felt colder but better and finally reached Rottnest.
Apparently Rottnest was originally called Rattsnest because the guy that discovered it thought it was infested with giant rats. They are actually called Quokkas and are everywhere on the island, even in shops and things which is weird. They look like a cross between mini kangaroos and giant rats. Our bags were taken to the campsite for us when we arrived so we had some lunch to settle our stomachs. It was overpriced and not particularly great. We had a wander around the island but it rained for most of the day and it turns out that the island doesn't look quite so much like paradise when its raining and there are big black clouds looming over the sea. So we went to the campsite to get our stuff and set up the tent only to find that the drop off point for bags was outdoors with no covering and so our bags had been rained on for the best part of the day and were soaked....brilliant. We set up the tent, bought a bottle of wine and some chocolate and drank ourselves to sleep. Well when I say sleep I mean we lay down and closed our eyes but as we couldn't be bothered to set up the bed we were lying on the hard ground and were bloody freezing.
After a rubbish nights sleep we woke up to the sun shining and so quickly hired some snorkeling equipment and made the most of it. The water was pretty clear and looked really turquoise in places but there wasn't much to look at other than a bit of seaweed. We saw some dolphins swimming just as we were boarding the ferry to leave and it started raining (again). We sat right next to the outer doors this time in anticipation of another vomit inducing journey however it was pretty calm and we were both fine. When we got to Perth we headed straight to the airport for a midnight flight to Uluru (Ayers Rock).
