Glacier hike today which was AWESOME!! Walked down to the station at about 10:15am with Gina - a girl from Ireland - and put on all the gear they gave us. Overtrousers (really baggy!), thick socks, big boots that weighed about 5kg each, gloves, beanie and a raincoat. We were also given ice talonz for walking on the ice. We got on the bus at 11am and headed to the glacier carpark. From there it was a one hour trek to the glacier base where we attached the talonz to our boots.
The walk up the glacier was very TIRING and you had to continually dig the talonz into the ice to make sure you didn't slip. We crawled through crevaces, up ice hills and down them (mostly which i fell down!) The time on the ice was about 4 hrs and as we neared the top we could see the really blue ice - it is so beautiful, kind of an electric blue colour as you will see in the photos. Climbing through the crevaces was a bit challenging...there was a REALLY skinny one which I got stuck in but managed to squeeze my way through eventually!
Ali - the guy i met in Greymouth - was on the tour with me so we had a good time laughing at each other falling and getting stuck. We got back at 5pm and I was only too happy to take off my wet socks and boots andg et into a nice warm shower! Headed out to the pub with Ali, Sarah and Gina for an early drink and a chat and then we all headed for bed because we were absolutely b*****ED!!
