Where to start? Well may as well say what we are up to now and work my way backwards for the last few days.
Currently me and Lozza (as she likes to be called now) are sitting in our what can only be described as a very hot sweat box, taken in the evening at Byron Bay beneath the night sky. Bliss if it wasn't so hot.
Since Lozza's last blog we had just departed the great ocean road. That was absolutely fantastic, the coastline was so beautiful and the roads so much fun.
We are heading north along the east coast so from the great ocean road we had to travel back through Melbourne to then go up through Victoria to New South Wales. Unbeknown to us before we set of there was bush fires going through Victoria at the time and by some divine miracle we missed those by I'd say no more than 10mins. So totally obliviously we carried on our way, later to find out the severity of them.
Driving in Straya (as I like to call it now) is very painstaking as it takes so long to get anywhere. So the first day after the great ocean road was spent driving and driving and driving until the light started to fade and we thought to veer off the road into a caravan park. Probably the most hick town in all of straya and that town was the greatest in the world. The people were friendly enough and suggested we get jobs in the steel mine there so we didn't have to leave. I think not!!
Back on the road we headed to a bridge called the sea cliff bridge. Why drive towards a bridge I here you ask, It's built on the side of a cliff and overlooks the sea I say. Google machine it, it is pretty cool actually. Eventually docked into the little seaside retirement town shell cove in the afternoon. After a full day of driving and not a lot to do there, we had a nice stroll along the beach and hit the hay.
Back on the road again and now we are heading towards the fun stuff. The Blue Mountains, about an hour and a halves drive from shell cove so Lozza offered to drive it as she'd been mostly a passenger, or chief navigator. You choose!
Blue Mountains are very spectacular, we aimed for a little town called Blackheath as it was one of the furthest away and we were going to work our way back through all the things we wanted to do. As we got here relatively early we set of on one of the recommended bush walks around the mountains. As we are both spring chickens in our primes we set off on the medium route. The walk took us through the Grose valley and to the points of interest 'Bridal veil falls', 'Evans Lookout' and 'pulpit rock' the highest in the blue mountains. The views from these were absolutely spectacular, mesmerising. We took a lot of pictures but nothing can really do it justice (take a look, it saves me thinking up superlatives for them). The walk itself was pretty difficult, maybe were not in our prime or maybe it was how underprepared I was, walking through the harsh rainforest in what can only be described as a pair of very short swimming shorts and a vest (tourist). 3hours later and with quite a bit of sunburn on the shoulders we made in back. 1hour under the recommended time.
The following day, Lozza's birthday. We headed a little way back down the mountains to Katoomba. The home of the 'three sisters' rocks. We arrived around 10 in the morning to be greeted by cloud. You could not see 5 meters in front of you, rather than a rock formation in the valley. Not to be deterred we decided to head to the sky train and maybe pop back in the afternoon if the clouds had shifted. At the sky train it was the same, stuck in the clouds we were. We took solace in the fact it was morning and the sun could burn them off in the afternoon.
We found a café and had a cake and coffee for lozza's birthday and decided what we would do, or how to kill some time whilst the clouds shifted. So…. We went for a walk. The walk would take us through the Jamieson valley past waterfalls and eventuate at the echo point, viewing area for the three sisters. Again the walk took us past some breathtaking views of the valley and sure enough when we got to echo point the clouds were gone. Must have realised it was lozza's birthday! Part of the walk actually takes you onto the first rock which was pretty cool. Lots of steep steps though, aptly named the giants steps.
Lozza's Chinese came out and she got snap happy with the camera. So plenty of those pictures to look at.
After we finished there it was mid-afternoon so decided to get our skates on.
Lozza here - Dave-o, as he shall now be known seeing as he has taken it upon himself to rename me, has got bored and is now playing on facebook! So after our amazing trip at the Blue Mountains we drove and camped at a small town called Windsor and as it was my birthday Dave-o treated us to a massive Chinese feast (it lasted us 2days!)
The next day we visited the Hunter Valley aka wine region. We walked, not drove, to a couple of vineyards and sampled a lot of free wine - whites, pinks, reds, fizzy stuff we basically sampled anything they were willing to give us. We tried some really nice wines and ended up buying ourselves a few bottles to take on the road with us.
After Hunter Valley we headed to Newcastle where we had a lovely walk along the coast to a point called Nobby's head where we got a good view of the beaches and the light house. We also had a nosey at the people swimming in the ocean baths then we headed to the gardens where we enjoyed a romantic cup of tea from our flask, well it was Valentine 's Day after all. The weather that day had turned poop (overcast and rainy) so we hopped back in the van and made our way towards Port Macquarie.
The weather in Port Macquarie was even worse - torrential rain! So we took refuge in a café and enjoyed a nice posh coffee. After our coffee we went on a walk through the rainforest nature reserve which was great but very wet! Later that day the rain dried up and so we made our merry way to the beach. The waves were huge so we jumped straight in, Dave-o was doing his best to ride the waves but we concluded it would be much more fun with a body board so that will probably be our next purchase. After splashing around in the sea we played some bat and ball but we were so out of practice that we just looked like a pair of tools!
Today from Port Macquarie we drove to Coffs Harbour where we walked along to muttonbird island to take in the views of the harbour, on the way back through the harbour we did some fish spotting because the water was crystal clear. To reward ourselves for all our walking we treated ourselves to fish n chips.
From Coffs Harbour we drove to Bellina, about 40km out of Coffs the clouds cleared and we were reminded what clear blue sunny skies looked like hurrah! The scenery was lovely, there was lush green sugar cane farms on our right and a sparkly blue river to our left. After two hours in the sweatbox we arrived at Bellina and dived straight into the sea! The beach was so pretty - white sand which actually squeaked beneath your feet!
Anyway I think that brings us full circle to where we are now in Byron Bay. We promise not to leave it so long next time. Well done by the way if you made it all the way to the end of this massive story!
Much love, Lozza and Dave-o xxx
