Raphael painted Plato and Aristotle at the centre of this work, using Leonardo da Vinci (whom he worshipped) as the model for Plato. After seeing the Sistine ceiling, Raphael added another figure - Michelangelo as the brooding figure in front leaning on a block of marble.
