So in the end I spent around 11 weeks living in Brisbane and all of them living in Bunk hostel.I moved into dorm number 102 with 5 friends, I was the only girl but it didn't matter they treated me no different and I enjoyed living with them, chesneys bed time stories about his Donkey named Wonkey, keith waking us all up at 4am singing songs from High School Musical and the endless laughs surrounding the boys conquests - they were nice lads and I hope to stay friends with them for a long time.
In my 11 weeks I had 2 jobs, the first was as a personal Assistant, I enjoyed the varied job and was upset when it ended after 6 weeks but quickly found a new job in a call centre with 10 other people from bunk.We weren't cold calling which was good but we were calling on behalf of charities to raise funds -no where near ideal but it was good money (around 17 pounds an hour)and due to there being plenty of banter it wasn't too bad really, however I never again want to talk about bear bating in Pakistan or Doctors without borders - stupid Medicin San Frontier!
I feel like although I was only there nearly 3 months I lived in Brisbane, I knew all the cheap eats, best bars and people who counted and my group in bunk enjoyed all this with me.I cant talk more highly than my bunk group, it fluctuated, but our core group of 20 were together for a good 2 months, we ate dinner together, we would drink in Birdies together and we enjoyed the weekends in the sun by the lagoon together.
It wasn't all normal life though, occasionally I would mix it up, one weekend I hopped into a car with Kara and Dan and went up the coast back to Noosa Heads where some of the girls were, they had set of again on their travels a couple of days earlier and seen as I was missing them already it was great to meet up with them again. On the sat it rained so we stayed in our dorm and watched An Idiot Abroad which curled up in our duvets and eating pizza, but on the Sunday the sun came out! So we headed straight for the beach! We spent the afternoon lazing on the sand, enjoying the hot sun sometimes snoozing and sometimes giggling like little girls.I feel like I have made good friends in Kayleigh and Becky and if we were heading the same way I would have enjoyed travelling with them, but I was going south and they were heading north so it wasn't meant to be, a reunion in London has already been arranged for early next year though JIt was really sad to say goodbye but Kara helped me get over it by suggesting we had beer and crips sat on the balcony watching the sun set over the lake before we headed back to the big city.
I also enjoyed a trip to the Lone Pine Koala sanctuary with Hailee and Jane another 2 girls who I clicked with straight away, both lovely and both friends for life now whether they like it or not.The Koala sanctuary was such a funny day, all of the high lights seemed to involved animals falling in love such as the vulture who fell in love with a plastic bottle and ruined the flight show by refusing to let go of it, 2 kangaroos getting on it in the middle of the park and 2 animals falling for Jane. That's right Jane found that she was an animal magnet and not necessarily in a good way, the first incident came in the form of a close encounter with a koala - we had got vouchers to have our pictures taken holding a heavy lump of a koala, they are so cute but their claws hurt a bit as they cling on to you like you're their fave tree.Everything went swimmingly for me and Hailee but when Jane was given the Koala it got a little bit excited and decided to erm how do I say this? The Koala ejaculated all over Janes top haha, Jane got Jizzed on by a Koala!! The koala minder said that it means the koala had taken a shine to her and was marking her as a potential mate! Luckily Jane didn't reciprocate the intense feeling and instead of falling in love left feeling a bit queasy. The second incident was actually quite sweet, we aren't sure whether it was because of the colour of her top or something but when we were walking around the aviary area we saw a big black parrot in a cage alone sat with his back to us.As soon as we walked up the parrot turned around and came close to the front of the cage, we thought it was pretty but nothing special so walked on, as jane walked away the parrot followed! That's when we realized Jane had yet again managed to get an animal admirer and we took great pleasure watching the parrot fluff up his feathers, stair into janes eyes and follow her up and down the cage - at one point she walked away and he went and hid, when she walked back up he popped his head up out of the tree to see if it was her, then flew down to see her! A slightly more pleasant animal encounter, Jane now prefers parrots to Koalas lol
Lone Pine was a great day out, see all the rescued Koalas babies and all.
Its weird, I spent 11 weeks in Brisbane, 11! And I have so many stories I don't know which ones to tell you, there are so many where do I begin? So I have decided to list some which you can all ask me about if you like when I get home.
Loosing a shoe in the cinema, steak night at RG's (orgies to the irish), jugs of cider in birdies, room 102 volley ball, goon nights at the elephant doing the MX puzzles in the kitchen whilst eating reduced cake from wollies, always being late to meet Kara and Dan, drawing harry potter glasses on with eye liner and going to watch it at the cinema with hailee, planking with sophie, the endless Thursday nights in the Vic followed by the worst Fridays in work still being drunk and only having 50 mins sleep, Sunday sesh at the lagoon, switch, attempting to keep up with the endless hook ups, dancing like a rock star with becky in rics, dancing like a gangster with hailee in every bar possible, Hoff FM, "Hello my name is laura and Im calling from Pareto phone on behalf of medicin san frontier", frolic with me George, the irish initiative creating a party everywhere we went, cheap pizza night, 'Some Irish Guys' singing twist n shout, $2 sushi, 4.15pm tea time at the elephant, cake tasting with work, my punk rock / lady boy leaving party and then being waved off by 20 people when I left.
I feel like I should embellish on my leaving party more, I had decided to leave on a Sunday afternoon making my last night in Brisbane a Saturday night, so it seemed simple that I should make this Saturday night my leaving party and after some thought it seemed like the perfect opportunity to finally have a fancy dress night (after chatting about it now and again but never doing it).On the Wednesday before the party me and kara were wondering around town, it was a bank holiday so some of the shops were shut but we were determined to find a fancy dress outfit and so we ended up in the valley in a cheap Chinese shop filled with every different kind of product under the sun from garden furniture to wigs.WIGS! From mullets to afros all in neon colours this shop had them all and so the theme of punk rockers was born. When Saturday finally came around I donned my neon pink bob, my make up artist friend Siobhan put me on some black lip stick and fake eye lashes and I was ready to rock out with the rest of the girls - the boys hadn't had much time to find outfits and didn't understand the point of the wigs and so I wasn't surprised when they called me back to our room to help them get ready? To help them pick skirts / dresses and put their make up on for them?! That's right in a rush the boys had decided punk rockers meant that they could dress as women. And so at 8pm we appeared from 102, punk rock girls with back combed hair, black make up, ripped tops and leather skirts along with our escorts - a different type of girl who all had facial hair, smudged make up (they wouldn't stop blinking!), plastic wigs and what looked like the cast of East Enders ward robe, we had pat, cat and possibly one of the tweeny's? I'm not sure but it was hilarious, I don't know what it is about fancy dress which makes people more up for a laugh? But we were all up for a great night and I was so pleased by the turn out, everyone was out, everyone had put effort in and Birdies bar didn't know what had hit them? People looked baffled confused and generally amused with our punk rock / lady boy theme.I had such a great night!! It was the best end to a brilliant 3 months in Brisbane, I drank, danced and laughed my way through the night with 30 or more of my good friends and ended the night sat on the floor with an extra large Fanta telling the boys how much I was going to miss them and more importantly how much I loved Fanta with ice! Haha ah good times.
My time in Brisbane was great, but it wasn't travelling it was a means to an end with fun mixed in. After 10 weeks of hard work, harder play and countless laughs I was ready to move on to what I came out here to do, explore and travel.
And so at 4pm on Sunday 21st August I got into the Bunk shuttle towards the bus station, loads of people came to say good bye and all lined the steps to the hostel singing our goodbye song L but more about my goodbye at the start of my next blog.
I just want to say a few comments about people I stayed with ….
The boys from 102 - your all so different but you all compliment each other so well, I will never forget "stoned like", "sauce", "Weeeere all in this together", you all putting up with my snoring when I was sick (OMG! She sounds like a bull?!), our bed time stories, the giggles and er grunts coming from the bunk of dreams, volley ball and the way you all treated me like I was special - the only girl allowed inside the circle. If you ever need the female perspective again you know where I am J
Soph - you're a leg end! A boys girl who has attitude and doesn't care who knows it, never loose your confidence and always keep that amazing laugh of yours! Take care of the boys for me ok?!
Hailee - You're my girl hailes, Im going to miss you so much!! I can count on two hands the people who I have met in the past year which I know I will definitely keep in touch with and your one of those.I love the way you shock and surprise me on a daily basis, I never know what your going to do next?! I mean who would have thought one of your many alter egos Indie would appear and actually make you money?! Im going to miss everything that we used to do, our poached egg breakies at 10am, our themed nights (i.e. gangstas / harry potter) chilling in the park and most of all the way we make each other laugh - friend for life brap brap brap! Haha!
Kara - I knew after meeting you in Thailand and travelling Laos with you that we would definitely see each other again who would have thought it would be in oz?! You and Dan are a couple that other couples aim to be like, I love you both and cant wait to meet up in england / wales?! That's if you can afford to meet up with me - I mean if dan has stopped buying ridiculously expensive t-shirts for little reason but the fact it makes him look like the main stage at Glastonbury, its just a triangle dan! Haha
Jane and Siobhan - you two are the funniest cousins ever! Your irish drunk impression always makes me giggle! Take care of dean ok? And make sure you keep me up to date with all the crazy Siobhan / hoff gossip, Siobhan / hoff = siohoff? Hoffbhan?? You decide!
Anyway I could send everybody their own comment but I would be here for hours so I will leave it there, just because I didn't mention you doesn't mean I don't miss you, it just means you weren't that important to me … nah just kiddin, it probably means ive txt you and told you already!
Bye bye Brisbane - hello the road, next stop Sydney!!
