We finished our two months in Thailand with a few days in Koh Lanta. On the ferry on the way there we were being hassled by lots of people from different hotels trying to make you stay in their bungalows. Luckily being on the boat for quite a long time before it had set off we managed to befriend a few of them and before long there was a bit of a bidding war going on with me and Lawrence being surrounded by about ten different people all going on and on about how much their rooms cost and what fantastic locations they were all in and everything. It was pretty funny and we ended up getting an awesome place to stay. We had an airconditioned bungalow with a fridge, TV, a shower with a shower curtain and, best of all, a duvet!!! It was pure luxury compared to the other places we'd been staying, I think the guy felt sorry for us! The beach there was pretty nice so we spent most of our time there to be honest. One night we decided to go out and after having a bottle of Sangsom in the bungalow we went to the Reggae Bar. We shared buckets of sangsom for ridiculously cheap prices and the guys that worked there told us about this bar opening that was happening further up the beach so we went along to investigate. So much for one quiet drink!!!! We met Mike and Tracy, a couple who were staying in the bungalow next to ours so hung out with them for most of the night. A few rowdy buckets later we were talking to a guy from Denmark who told us he was famous and had been in one of the Bourne Ultimatum films or something and said that he was currently on location in Thailand but couldnt tell us anything else about it, I so don't believe him! We somehow managed to lose Mike so spent quite a long time on the way home looking for him to find out that he'd made it home hours before us! The next day wasn't great weather which was quite well timed as we probably wouldn't have appreciated it anyway. The movie channel on the TV definitely came in useful that day!!
After a few more days on the beach it was time for us to head to Malaysia. We decided to get the journey from Koh Lanta to Kuala Lumpur over and done with in one day, it was going to take three buses and 24 hours so we were dreading it. Luckily, by Thai standards the entire journey was relatively stress free. The first bus picked us up just before 7am and took us to Surrathani. After a brief wait we got another bus to Hat Yai where we had a five hour wait before the next bus. Luckily it was quite a big city so we wandered around and killed the time quite easily. The next bus was an overnight trip all the way to Kuala Lumpur so we were delighted when it turned out to be a luxurious bus! The seats were huge and reclined so they were practically beds and we had blankets and everything. The only annoying part of this bit of the journey was having to get on and off at immigration to check out of Thailand and into Malaysia. The bus arrived in KL early at around 4am. We decided not to bother getting a hotel for the remainder of the night and sat in a 24hour Indian food court place instead. They convinced me to have this roti stuff which turned out to basically be banana pancake with curry sauce. Weird but it kind of worked! At around 8 we finally caved and went and found a hotel to sleep and that turned out to be very hassley as they were all expensive but so disgusting they were uninhabitable. We settled on one mediocre place after a while. After a sleep we went to explore china town and look for a nicer place to stay for the rest of the time there. That evening we were sitting in the reception area with some of the other guests who were from Nepal and India, they took a particular shine to Lawrence beacuse he looked like their brother (their words!) and when I was in the loo at one point one started telling Lawrence that he looks like a classic Persian and that if Lawrence wanted to go to Nepal he'd be his sponser and he could take photos of Lawrence to put on the internet and they'd go 50/50 on the profits!! Hilarious, but needless to say we didn't end up going out to a club with them!
After we moved to a nicer hotel the days just kind of flew by. We went to Little India on the Saturday night for their market night which was so crowded and busy but full of so many interesting things and exotic foods. We also went to the Batu Caves where we saw a massive Buddah (I think it's the world's largest) and Shawn had brought popcorn so we all fed the monkeys. They were so cute, they would hold on to the hand with popcorn in so that you couldn't take your hand away while they ate individual pieces of popcorn at their leisure. I definitely want a pet monkey!!! The guy who ran the next guesthouse we were staying at had one that wore a nappy and babyclothes! We went to the Petronas towers on three different days to try and go for the sky bridge walk but we were fated not to do it!! The first time we were told that going for sunset was the best time to go so arrived at 5am one morning only to find out that the towers didn't open til 8:30 on any day and that because it was Monday they weren't open at all. So we killed time until the Vietnamese embassy was open to sort out the visas and that was more hassle than I'd anticipated with people pushing in the queue and flapping around. The second time we went we missed to tickets by miles so we were positive that when we arrived for 8:00 when the ticket office opened we couldn't possibly be wrong. Unfortunately we arrived just as they were putting up a sign saying no more tickets available today. Oops! So I dragged Lawrence to go and see New Moon in the cinema, I was happy enough! Apart from that Kuala Lumpur was pretty much just wandering around the markets, hanging around the guesthouse and eating bargain priced Indian food!
Next stop was Cambodia; we flew at 7am from KL to Siem Reap and arrived bright and early in the morning. We found a nice guesthouse to stay in where luckily the prices were much nicer to our wallets! Here we met Iana, an Australian girl who had already been there for nearly a week so knew all the good places to go. In Siem Reap the weather was absolutely glorious every single day. We got a three day pass for the temples so a few of the days were filled with going from temple to temple. One of the days we got up at 4:30 to see Angkor Wat at sunrise and it was definitely worth it as it was so beautiful. In some ways it was quite stressful to go to the temples, everywhere you turned there were people asking you to give them money for some worthy cause or another. I found it especially difficult to ignore all of the kids who were selling souvenirs and bracelets and things as a lot of them were so young and had no shoes on. Also, if you said that no you didn't want a cold drink/silk scarf/whistle/bamboo instrment/10 bracelets for $1 they wouldn't let it drop they'd follow you and ask why not. I was a bit of a sucker if the kids looked sweet enough/were nice enough and bought a couple of cheapo bits and bobs just for the sake of it.
Nights out in Siem Reap were also good. There were a couple of bars that gave out t shirts with certain drinks so we went around collecting them. Also beer was only 25p for a glass!!! The night that Flo arrived we also went out with a bunch of people from the guesthouse and there was a band in Pub Street playing really good music so that was a lot of fun. After about 5 days in Siem Reap we decided to head here to Sihanoukville. We weren't getting the bus until the evening which meant we had the entire day to waste so Flo and I decided to go off for a bit of pampering. We found a place that for 10 pounds we could get three hours worth of treatments so we both had mango body wraps followed by an aromatherapy massages. After this I had a facial while Flo had a manicure and pedicure, we came out feeling very relaxed!!! The bus was quite comfortable, but the roads were so bumpy it was impossible to sleep. You can imagine our outrage after a week of beautiful weather to finally arrive at a beach destination and for it to be absolutely pouring with rain! We hunted around for a nice place to stay for a while and settled down to watch some films. Flo, Lawrence and I watched He's Just Not That Into You, The Hangover and Twilight while Martin (the scottish guy who also came with us) slept through them all! That evening we headed to the beach and had a few of the cheap cocktails that were on offer. Unfortunately that meant we didn't make it to the beach today either as it didn't seem worth the hassle of getting a tuk tuk. We're off to Phnom Phen tomorrow morning bright and early so Martin can make his flight to Bangkok and Flo is getting the same flight the following day. After that Lawrence and I are heading to Vietnam around the 20th December.
