Early morning start today to get a taxi to the airport, with our flight due to leave at 9.30am we caught a taxi just before 7 to allow an hour to get to there. The taxi driver was weaving in and out of the traffic, there seems to be no road rules in China! It's just a case of go where you can while you can and if someone is in your way then beep them!
So anyway, our flight to Hong Kong ended up being diverted to Xiamen... this is a city about 45 mins north of HK, due to very bad weather over HK. We should have landed in HK at 12.30pm, but landed in Xiamen at 1.00pm and were then told to wait on the plane... At 2.20pm we finally took off again for Hong Kong and eventually landed at 4.30pm. The turbulence was terrible before we landed, we seemed to circle a lot before the pilot even made an attempt to go through the clouds -which were huge and looked like big fluffy marshmellows but they didnt feel nice flying through them as the plane was very shakey and jumpy - not nice!!
After landing we decided to get the train and then the metro to the hotel. This unfortunately took almost another 2 hours to do with us getting off at a tube stop too early and then taxi drivers refusing to take us the rest of the way!! Strange!
The hotel is sooo lovely though. We have a fantastic view of the harbour (we were upgraded when we checked in!) and it's only a 2 minute walk to the tube.
Feeling hungry, well starving, after dumping our bags in the room we found a restaurant just around the corner from us and enjoyed sliced duck breast, boiled rice, pork ribs in strawberry glaze, and our favourite sliced green beans fried with soy, ginger, garlic and chilli - yum!
Tomorrow we will go exploring, I just hope the weather clears up, though if the weather report is anything to go by it's raining everyday till Saturday!! First impressions though - just what I expected and wanted to see walking out of the tube - busy, flashing lights from the big billboards, lots of people and lots of huge skyscrapers!
