Headed away from Arusha on our journey towards Zanzibar, we passed Mount Kilimanjaro- although you couldn't tell because it was so cloudy so we couldn't see a thing!
Our base camp for Zanzibar was in Dar Es Salaam, where we left the truck, Steve and Moses (our driver and cook), while we disappeared for a few days R and R. Dar Es Salaam was a bit of a sweaty dump, but the campsite was just outside and was lovely, right on the beach!
Had to catch the bay ferry from our campsite, back into Dar the next day to get on the ferry over to Zanzibar. It was absolutely chucking it down so we got saoked, not a good start to our days in the sun!
Once we arrived into Stonetown in Zanzibar we checked into the hotel, which was down a really cute, little Parisian style street and then headed off to Prison Island to visit a giant tortoise sanctuary and do some snorkelling. The snorkelling wasn't too good because it was still a bit overcast. The tortoises were really cool though, we got to feed them and stroke them, some of them were 185 years old!The sea was really roughon the way back and we nearly capsized several times but it was so much fun!
After some nice hot showers back at the hotel we took a potter around Stonetown. It had a great atmosphere. We got lost, but it was nice to explore whilst tryng to find our way back! We went into a fish market for our dinner that night, it was really loud and crowded and we had to barter for our fish. I'm sure I got ripped off but it tasted so good! After dinner we headed to a local Reggae bar!
Off to the north of the island tomorrow for a few days on the beach!
