We got the ferry early morning from Dar es Salaam port which was pretty chaotic. The sea was quite rough at the start but settled down luckili and there was a budget African soap to watch on the way which was entertaining! We had an afternoon and night in Stone Town, which was more run down than we had expected but had some pretty buildings and little narrow streets with shops and children running round everywhere! In the afternoon we did a trip to a spice farm and tried to guess which spice came from which plant - which we weren't great at but it was interesting all the same. We then headed back to town and visited the site of the old slave market and chambers where the slaves were kept. It was interesting but pretty horrific at the same time.
We then had a great evening in Stone Town at the food market the night before Ramadam. There were lots of stores of hot food (Chapati, Zanzibar Pizza, Samosas and Sugar Cane juice) all for about 1000 TSH each (about 50p - 1 pound). I had about 5 plates! (Stani not Laura!)
The second day on Zanzibar we took a boat to Prison Island - an Island with a prison built on that actually got used for quaranteen of infectious diseases. Better than this it had giant tortoises roaming around that we were able to feed! They rocked! After Prison Island we were taken by bus to the north coast of Zanzibar to Kendwa Beach where we have spent the last couple of days chilling on the beach, watching sunsets, catching up on the cricket and using very slow internet (hence the lack of photos, it's too slow!!!!!)
Tomorrow we head back to mainland Tanzania to make our way across to Malawi which we are looking forward to!
Hope everyone is well, we will write again as soon as possible,
Lots of love xx
