Popayan
A clean white washed city between San Agustin and Cali with cobbled streets was how our guide book described popayan. Unfortunately they were digging up the road when we were there but the plaza as like many South American cities was beautiful. We stayed just off the square in a hostel called Park life and enjoyed the internal courtyard and roof terrace looking onto the dome of the church next door.
It was market day in the nearby down of Silvia so with a few other people from the hostel we set off at 7:00am. The market itself was large and complete with everything from machetes to melons. The highlights were seeing the meat section where they had butchered a lamb and didn't leave anything to waste, not even the feet! What you would use the feet for I don't know. Also we saw the Colombian version of Barry Scott (Cillit Bang). He was demonstrating his wire brush tool that magically cleaned rusty pots "Estalido! Y la suciedad esta desaparecido". The most interesting part of the market were the indigenous people wearing their blue skirts, blue shawls and bowler hats (See pictures).
We got back and enjoyed our travelling tv fix of watching Suits. It is strange not having any tv, a definite good thing and something you begin to understand you don't really need. The odd film or two is good but watching endless crap on tv when you get home from work wastes so much time. We also had enough of Facebook realising that whenever we got wifi we would check it. We agreed to give it up and delete it from our phones and see if we could live without it for a week. At time of writing it has been 5 days and counting.
That night we met up with Sam and Rory for a few beers at an excellent Swiss owned pizza restaurant then on to a pub for more silly travelling banter.
Next stop Cali.
