We set our alarm for 6.30, as we wanted to go up the Petronas Towers, but Alice's glands were swollen again, and she didn't want to keep getting up early and make herself more rundown. We woke up again to the most disgusting smell, which was like a combination of fish food and pork, which didn't leave for the whole time we had showers, got ready and ate breakfast (it wasn't pleasant standing in the dining area, near to the kitchen, waiting for them to give us hot water for Alice's cinnamon porridge; I had brought a chicken puff the previous day as I kept seeing them everywhere and wondering what they were, but I took one bite and refused to eat any more as the smell was so bad, and the taste of chicken didn't help). We were hoping that whatever it was, it wasn't our free Friday night dinner!
I had forgotten to get a contact lens case, and we had seen posters for a food festival today back at the megamall, so we went to go get loads of free samples. Being in such a diverse place as Malaysia was great as there was always something new to try! It was a bit weird when someone offered us some goat milk tablets and goat formula milk that I think was meant to be for children! There was a vast range of cookies to try, and apparently they eat them for Chinese New Year.
There is both a bird park and a butterfly park in Kuala Lumpur, but there was a café overlooking the bird park (which was also the more expensive one) so we effectively got to see both by eating (because we were so hungry after the morning we'd just had…) at the café. I had chicken satay- the sauce was delicious but the chicken was a bit questionable, as was the time it took to come out (i.e. very quickly). We were joined by various birds, including a massive hornbill (I could only identify it because the café was called hornbill, and so there was a cartoon picture of one on the menu).
The butterfly park was really pretty, although it was a shame as we had just read about various types of butterflies, and Alice had said she wanted to see a particular one. I spotted one, opening and closing its wings, but then by the time Alice had got her phone out to take a picture, it was keeping them firmly shut. There was also an outdoor section with turtles, fish, prawns and frogs, and an inside section with other insects in glass tanks. A really big turtle kept running/swimming into the glass, as if trying to escape his tank, so we felt sorry for him. It was a bit scary seeing all the different types of spiders and insects that are supposed to be found in South America, although there were some beautiful butterflies from there, that were metallic blue. It was incredible how much some of the insects looked like leaves, and there was one whose back looked like a man's face.
An unsuspecting green vegetable dish in our free Friday night dinner turned out to be the culprit of the bad smell. The butternut squash dish was delicious though, as was the sauce of some curry that had meat in but I just had a potato from it as it looked like there was more bone than meat. We decided to go and get some DVDs from the market to watch on my laptop, but it turned out to be quite a difficult decision on which to get. He had offered us 4 DVDs for 50 RM, and so our original line up was Taken, Taken 2, Fresh Meat season 1 and 21 Jump Street, but then the man said they didn't have Taken, so we decided not to get Taken 2, as I haven't seen the first one. But we wanted to get 4 because we were getting a better deal (he was offering 3 for 45). We chose a few that he didn't have, and then Total Recall, but it was so hard to choose a 4th and I knew Alice wanted to see Taken 2 so we decided to get it anyway. We wanted proof that they would work, so he played them on his DVD player, and after watching a few clips of 21 Jump Street, Alice realised she had watched it before, so we swapped it for The Sitter.
When we got back home, and tried to play them, they weren't being recognised in my DVD drive. After a few hours of cursing the illegal DVD market, I realised it was because I hadn't downloaded the software for it (it's an external drive). It was too late to watch anything so hopefully next time we want a film night in, it will work!

Gerry Barker Your experiences in Kuala Lumpur do not sound at all inviting to me especially the descriptions of the "food". Please be careful in what you are doing and eating
