Deciding to split up for the day, Emma, Laura and Jamie opted for a cultural day whereas Dan and Emily had a lazier one. First we visited the History of Fashion Museum in the San Telmo district and were immediately amused by the cut-out heads of 1940s fashionistas posing for various photos with them. Emma being a little vertically challenged, was offered some blocks to stand on by the museums owner much to our delight! The Museum displayed fashion throughout the eras and all of us preferred the modern clothing. We were amazed to see that men´s formal fashion has not changed and how women´s fashion keeps repeating itself throughout the ages.
San Telmo is known for its vintage style and antiques (Shel would be in her element!) so after wondering around the quaint market stalls and being highly amused by one man, parading his new bag invention (which we later spotted elsewhere) seven in one style - which looked suspiciously like a mouldy curtain, we arrived at the Penal Museum. The building in which we found ourselves, was originally a women´s mental asylum and later a prison. In each room we found different prison memorabilia and judicial books along with mannequins dressed as prisoners and nurses with full faces of make-up! Deciding the pros and cons of the replica prison cells and which we would prefer to be held captive in, we realised we had outstayed our welcome and needed to leave! Emma, having chosen the room with the smallest dimensions was concerned that the toilet proximity to her head was a little close for comfort!
After a brief power-nap we woke up at 11.30pm to go out for dinner in preparation for clubbing which did not begin until 2am! Making our way to Lost, a hip hop ghetto club (where most people appear to be gangstas - men in large peaked caps, trousers round their ankles and lots of bling, women in white caps, miniscule tops with full stomach on display and huge hoop earrings) we felt a little out of place! However, once inside the music got us in the mood to dance and we all had a good night except the constant fear we were going to lose all our belongings as the club was heaving and we were sure we would come back minus some cameras!
Despite our night finishing at 6am, we (Jamie, Laura and Emma) had already booked a full-day tour to a ranch leaving at 8.30am! Feeling slightly worse for wear but glad to still have possession of our cameras, we headed to the ranch on the outskirts of Buenos Aires, all of us catching up on some well-needed sleep! We were welcomed at the ranch with enchilladas (meat pies) and wine before making our way around the ranch museum. This consisted of a small house which we all agreed would be a great place to stay, with views of the horses and an orchard! After realising the rest of our group had already left to go horse-riding, we sauntered down to the field collecting more meat pies (Laura´s idea) before clambouring aboard a horse and cart for a rickety ride. The cowboy leading the horses took a particular liking to Laura making her sit next to him and putting his arm around her for photos she did not really want! Each mounting our own horse, with Emma insisting on the largest one of them all, we trotted in unison around the field, Laura chuffed that after all these years she can still ride!
We were called for lunch in an extensive barn, where we were served a huge BBQ whilst watching a tango and meringue show, accompanied by Argentinian music. Towards the end of the display, several audience members joined in with the dancing but we were more interested in dessert! Ending the day, we were invited to watch a horse show which involved the riders racing one another towards a suspended wooden pole with keyrings hanging off it. The idea was for the jockey to grab the keyring whilst moving at a fast speed. Finally, these jockeys lifted audience members onto their horses and galloped around the field. Emma, luckily got paired with Laura´s admirer who had become quite the ladies´ man, attempting to sit on Emma´s lap, causing her to scream and choose to sit on the horses bum rather than in the saddle with him!
Ending a fun-filled day with another sleep on the coach, we headed back to the centre of Buenos Aires. Still wanting to explore the city and it being Friday night, the three of us went to possibly the most beautiful synagogue we have seen, comparable only to Marble Arch or Poland. The service, being Reform, truly inspired us as it was more of a concert with breathtaking singing and music. Being at the centre of Judaism we found some American Jews who invited us to dinner in Palermo Soho with them. Arriving at the restaurant to be told there was an hour wait at eleven o´clock, we knew it was slightly out of our league when they offered us free champagne and hot food to apologise for the wait! Choosing to slip away discreetly to a more reasonably-priced restaurant, we met Dan and the four of us enjoyed a hearty meal before heading back for a lengthy sleep!
