My arrival in Arequipa was punctuated by news trickling in of a horrific clash between police and indigenous protestors in the northern area of Bagua. The issue is the perceived threat of the Peruvian government selling off rights conerning the Peruvian rainforest to foreign oil, gas and logging companies. Peru was shook by the events and main towns and cities carried out such protests and vigils in support of their northern compatriots.
