Day 61 - Apollo Bay to Warrnambool, Gt Ocean Road
Well what a difference a day makes - we woke to blue skies and sunshine - yippee. I really do think that I suffer from S.A.D. as my mood changes so much when the sun shines! The B&B we are staying in, whilst being really nice serves breakfast between 8am and 9am so no lie in for us this morning. We took advantage of the change in the weather to get a few photos in the sun before we set off along the Great Ocean Road again to Warrnambool. This leg of the journey is probably the most picturesque with all the famous rock formations; we stopped at The Twelve Apostles, Loch Ard Gorge, The Arch, London Bridge and the Bay of Martyrs. We also stopped at Logan's Beach Whale Nursery but sadly the whales don't arrive until May and we can't wait that long! Finally arrived at the hotel around four and took ourselves down to Worm Beach to soak up a few rays for an hour or so. Had to take a photo of all the warnings which included - undertow, sharp drop off, underwater sand banks and snakes, needless to say we didn't swim although plenty were, mainly because the water was too friggin' cold. I know it's the southern ocean but….., and as for the snakes well you wouldn't get me anywhere near the undergrowth of the dunes.
David had suggested when we had dinner there that we should visit Tower Hill Game Reserve whilst we were at Warrnambool and as the guide books suggest the best time to go is around dusk we took ourselves off there around 6pm. It is advertised as a perfect place to see Kangaroo, Koala, Wallaby and Emu and we weren't disappointed as we saw all of these plus other rare wildlife including the largest spider I have ever seen, an animal that looks like a large hedgehog but with a long snout and powerful claws whose name escapes me at the moment and Bill says he can't be arsed to go look in the book right now, something to do with having too much to drink I expect! (I think it might be an Echidna). We didn't see the Lowland Copperhead snake, something I am very grateful for.
Off to Mt Gambier tomorrow……
