There were new sleep inhibitors at the Logrono Albergue in the form of squeaky rubber coated mattresses and Mosquitos! We were all quite badly bitten in the morning and there was a suggestion at one point that they might be from bed bugs! But this was dispelled as we concluded that the bites would be in a line. Travelling with half the NHS has its advantages! We managed to visit the Cathedral after breakfast in the cafe next door. It was very dark and ornate like a lot of Spanish churches. It would have been no surprise to me if a few members of the Spanish Inquisition had lept out from behind a pillar. But I managed a prayer and a candle as the next day was the anniversary of my mum's death. A trip to the pharmacy for bite relief cream and on to the bus station. We managed very competently to buy tickets from the machine, helped a boy from the Czech Republic do the same, buy sweets and more red liquorice, have coffee and board the bus. It was a good journey and, once in Bilboa, we found our accommodation which we had booked the day before quite easily. It was University Accommodation in the seedier end of town but was clean and cheap. We had 2 rooms and Jenny and I had the one with 2 single beds and the others a so called Suite!!! Well they did have complimentary slippers but the payback for that was more bunk beds which had not been in the picture on booking.com! After showering (which was great because we had real towels) we went off to the Guggenheim - what an amazing building!! Sadly better outside than in! There was a huge sheet metal installation by Richard Serra, an American minimalist sculptor, called a matter of time which was quite interesting. The works got barmier with an exhibition of Jeff Koon's work including the his quite hysterical display of encased Hoovers and the accompanying audio guide which talked about his interpretation of their sexuality and then the works of Jean-Michael Basquiat which, we all agreed, looked like things our children did in reception! Maybe we just aren't cultured enough to get it! But it was certainly fun and so the artists have managed to achieve a reaction albeit probably not the one they intended. It was fast approaching dinner time (anything beyond 6 in Caminoland) and so we wandered off looking for food. We were far too early for a restaurant dinner as they eat much later in Spain so we went in search of Tapas. A Spanish woman came to our rescue as we obviously were looking clueless gazing at our map in the middle of Bilbao's Oxford Street equivalent. She directed us to a square in the old part of the city where we had fabulous tapas and Rioja in a classic bar with lovely tiled walls, followed by some amazing ice cream in a shop a few doors along. We liked Bilbao! Walking back there were a huge number of police when we got near to where we were staying which said a lot about our location and presumably why it was so cheap! But who would take on a bunch of 6 middle aged women with hair like ours now was after 9 days on the Camino! We must have looked pretty scary!
