Well I finally made it to Nicaragua, and it was well worth the wait! We landed last night around 8:30pm and its been busy ever since. Walking out of the airport I literally jumped from excitement! I have been waiting so long to get here! I was happy to find a large van waiting to take our immense amount of luggage to our houses. The looks, smells and sounds of Managua at night reminded me of Kingston and I was immediately relieved. I could not help but think to myself, I picked the right place.
Kristina and I were dropped off first and we were the only two who knew anything about where we would be staying. Our host family was at the door to greet us along with out two dogs Ratta and Burro. We also have a pet tortise that I nick-named Tortelini, but he has yet to make an appearance. He only comes out when it rains. Once we put all of our stuff in our rooms we sat down for our first plate of gallo pinto, we also had sorel tea from Jamaica. (I was in heaven to say the least). I started using my spanish right away with Don Milton, our host father. He was patient with me and understood that I was trying really hard. We set up our rooms and got the lay of the land, and settled in for the night. Ratta and Burro slept right outside my window in the front yard, so cute! I also put up a bug net, but I don't think I really needed it. I have fans in my room, but I have been sweating non-stop since we landed. I don't hate it.
We woke up this morning to a beautiful sunny tropical day. Daysi made us breakfast and we got ready for the day. P.S. our host family grows its own coffee that we have every morning (again, in heaven). Don Milton drove us to school for our orientation. It was an orientation for all incoming freshman so it was busy. We made our way through campus and finally met Gabi, our amazing student guide. She took us under her wing and gave us a long tour of campus. She speaks four languages, including english, but she's pushing us to use our spanish which I really appreciate. After our tour we went to the mall for lunch and for the other students to get cell phones, mine has been working well so far. Then we walked around our neighborhood and she told us nice places to eat. Dinner is coming up, and I have no idea what is in store for tomorrow. All I know is that Maria will be picking us up at 8:30am on monday. Learning to go with the flow and not needing to know what will happen from one moment to the next was a valuable lesson in Jamaica, and its surely coming in handy now.
Well I'm off for now! Can't wait to see what is in store for the next few days! I heard my first crack of thunder a minute ago, looks like its rainy season afterall! woooo! Ok bye for now!!
