Kya Travels
We were supposed to get up at about 7 this morning to meet up at 745, but we slept in, so we got a phone call about 8 asking where we were, so we rushed to get ready and went up to the buffet and quickly grabbed some food to take away and went down to Eddy's cabin. Then we all went down off board the ship to Port Vila, Vanuatu. As we were about to walk through the gates from the port there were about 50 Vanuatu men all yelling through the gates trying to get our business for busses. We tried to get through them saying we wanted to look around the markets that were there for a bit, but they were so persistent, it was pretty intimidating, but eventually Darren had talked some people down to $10 each to get a bus down to the Cascade Waterfalls. We payed to get in and then walked up to the waterfalls. It was a pretty steep climb and we were so hot by the time we got up there. Then we got into the water and it was so cool and refreshing. They had lots of little pools, with the water going over the rocks into the different pools. The first one we went to was a pretty deep one and it had a pretty big waterfall there. You could actually go underneath the waterfall into a tiny space behind it that you could sit in. Darren didn’t come under because the waterfall hurt his sunburnt shoulders too much, but Eddy and I went under and sat there for a bit. The force of the water was so strong, it felt like you were going to be pushed right under the water and not get up! But it was good. Then we climbed up to another section of the waterfalls where it was deep. It was like a spa there; not hot, but we were just lazing around, it was awesome! After a bit longer of climbing rocks and chilling in the pools, we headed back, but then before we got to our stuff, we saw another pool that we wanted to go in, so we went down there for one last swim then went back up to our stuff and walked back down to the start. We had a Vanuatu beer called Tusker at the bar there, then got back into the bus, and got taken into town. We had a good conversation and laugh with the bus driver and then he dropped us at the markets. We went to the ATM and got out some Vatu-the Vanuatu currency-then had a quick look in the duty free shop before heading to the market. We had a look around the market for a while, and bought some souvenirs, then went to the food section and got a hamburger and a gourmet vegetarian pizza and some more tuskers. The food was pretty tasty! After that, we said goodbye to Nava, Steph and Leigh and went up to the car park to meet the bus driver again, but he wasn’t there, so we got in a different van to take us back to the ship. When we got there, Eddy and I went back on the ship to drop some stuff off that wasn’t waterproof, then we went back down to meet Darren, and we went over to the meeting area for the shore tours. We got there and sat down for about a minute, then the guy working there asked us which tour we were on, and when we told him he said that the bus had already left even though it was still 5minutes before the departure time! He also told us that we wouldn’t be able to get our money back. We were so annoyed and shattered and after a bit of arguing, we started to walk back to the ship to try and get our money back when he got paged and said that the bus would wait for us. We got on another bus and got driven up to where the bus was and got on, which was pretty awkward. The bus took us about 25 minutes away and dropped us off at the kayaking place. When we got there, the tour guides gave a quick talk about what we were going to do, then we got one of the kayaks and put on life jackets, and hopped in the water. We kayaked over to a very small island of dead coral, after getting a bit frustrated about how to kayak, because we couldn’t get our rhythms quite right, and it was pretty hard work. When we got over to the island, we got given masks and snorkels and went out for a bit of snorkelling. After giving Darren a very brief lesson on how to snorkel, I went out onto the reef. There were so many little fish everywhere! I was expecting it to be beautiful vibrant bright colours, but it was more dull colours, not many tropical looking coral or fish, but it was still good fun being out on the water, because it’s been a long time since I’ve snorkelled. Darren didn’t enjoy it as much as me, because he couldn’t quite get the hang of it. Then we kayaked back over to the shore, which was a bit better this time, we had a better system going. Back on shore, the tour guides gave us fresh coconut milk straight out of the coconut and the tastiest ladyfinger bananas I’ve ever tasted. Not long after that we were back on the bus to the ship. When we got there Eddy went back on board, but we stayed and had a look around the markets for a bit, because there was a bit of spare time left. Darren bought a shirt and thongs, then we headed back onto the ship. When we got up to our cabin, Darren had a bit of a sleep, but I was a bit bored so I went to meet Eddy up on the deck where they were having a barbecue. She wasn’t there when I got there, so a just found a deck chair and sat and ate some food for about half an hour and chilled by myself, which was really nice. Then when they got there we got some more food and found some more deck chairs and chilled for a while. We had a few drinks, and Darren met us up there. We also met up with Gina and Emma as well. It was an island themed night so I went back down to the cabin and got dressed up a bit then went back up to the deck. We stayed there for a few hours, then Darren and I decided we’d go down to bed for a quick nap, because we were b*****ed, and come back up for the circus show at 10, but when the alarm went off, we decided just to stay in bed for the night.
