Kya Travels
We got up at about 7am today, got ready and headed down to the buffet for breakfast. We met up with a few of the others there, but their table was full, so Darren and I just went to another one for breakfast by ourselves. After breakfast, we went to find them again, but they'd already left, so we headed down to their room to find them, via the shop for sunscreen and insect repellent. Nobody was in Eddy and Leigh’s room, so we went around to Nava and Steph’s and found everyone there. Then we headed off the ship into Noumea, New Caledonia. Firstly we just went for a walk down the street, but all the shops were closed, so we couldn’t do much there. We walked back towards the ship through these beautiful gardens, which had lots of sculptures and pretty water features and coconut trees. It was beautiful. When we got back to the ship, we got onto one of the busses that were doing tours and got driven around the city a bit. Two girls that we had watched in the 'Perfect Match’ night last night had joined us on the bus, and we all got off at Anse Vata beach. We had a bit of a look around before we decided we wanted to get a water taxi across to Duck Island, which was a small island that we could see from the waterfront there. We had to go on two separate taxis, because there wasn’t much room left in the first boat. We got across to the island, which was very hard to walk on in some places, because the sand was made up of mostly dead coral, so it dug into your feet for a bit. This was such an amazing island, with big carved towers and sculptures. They had these awesome deck chairs all across the island which you had to pay to sit on, so we didn’t get one of those. Then we went in for a swim in the beautiful clear water, and the girl we met last night, Emma, had brought a mask and snorkel, and she let us use it because she wears glasses and couldn’t see anything without them on. In my go I saw a pretty big fish, which was see through with a blue trim around its edges, and a school of heaps and heaps of really small fish. Then we went to the kiosk there and had a drink and a laugh with everyone. Then we waited for a water taxi to take us back to the mainland, which everyone fit into this time! We went for a bit of a walk back towards where we got off the bus earlier, and were going to go to the aquarium, but it was a bit expensive, so we didn’t bother. Then we walked around the island to the next beach, Lemon Bay Beach. We had a look around the restaurants on the waterfront and decided on a place called CoCao Samartija??? We had some pretty amazing seafood and I had a gourmet salad with deep fried camembert and egg. After a bit of a mix up with Darren’s Jim Beam and Coke, everyone had all their food and drink and it was amazing! I got Nava to teach me how to say "Merci Beaucoup. Sierte Delisioux" which meant, Thank you very much, the food was delicious. Then we had a quick look in one of the shops there, and I bought a postcard, then we headed across the road to the beach. There were two bollards in the water, which we swam out to and hung out on a bit. Eddy didn’t come out at first, cos we needed someone to watch our stuff. Then I went back to shore to let Eddy go in. We took some photos and hung out there admiring the 60-year-old boobs and g-string on the lady next to us – Noumea permits topless sunbathing on their beaches. After a bit of chilled time there we went back up to the Lemon Bay Beach bus stop and waited for our bus. When it got there, Nava couldn’t find our tickets so the guy left while we were still looking. Pretty much as soon as he left, she found the tickets, so we had to wait about 30-40 minutes for him to come back again. We got on the bus eventually and went back to the dock where the ship was, and had a look in the markets upstairs and I bought a dress and some lei’s for island night, and Darren bought some wrist bands and necklaces. Then the other guys wanted to get back on the ship, but we wanted to spend a little bit more time on the island, so we said goodbye and Darren and I went for another walk up the street. We stopped at an internet café, and got directions to the Museum, but when we got to the museum it was closed, so we walked back down through the park again, and went on the internet for a bit, before heading through the wharf to the embarkation point for the ship. Just before the gangplank there were some indigenous people with some of their traditional instruments. It looked like they were packing up, so Darren and I went and had a chat and Darren played the drums with the guy for a bit. When he stopped playing with them, they started their show, so we didn’t miss it at all! It was really amazing, with these awesome clave rhythms happening, and four female islander dancers and two male. The men did a section each, one with a sword and one with a tomahawk. We stayed and watched their show, which consisted of a lot of really short songs, some just with instruments, some instruments and vocals, and some with dancing as well. It was an amazing cultural show for us, which was awesome, because we didn’t get to see anything like that yet. Then we got back onto the ship. We went down to the cabin really quick then went up to the top deck where we met Leigh and Eddy and had a drink and a chat with Brooke, Karen and Scott while we watched the ship sail away. Then Darren and I had a dip in the pool. After that we went back to the cabin for a bit where we got showered and dressed then went to meet up with the others and we went to La Luna for tea, which is the Asian Fusion restaurant on board the ship. It was $20 dollars each, and we got an eight-course meal! The food was pretty good, and it just kept coming! There was so much! The dessert was pretty ****** but everything else was pretty tasty! While we were there, the second winners from the “Perfect Match” dating show were having their date, and the first winner, Emma got stood up. Eddy and Nava were being really annoying spying on them all night and gossiping. After dinner we were all pretty b*****ed so decided we wouldn’t have a big one and went to bed.
