Kya Travels
After our ridiculous overnight bus trip we finally arrived at our hotel in Cairo at 4:30am, two and a half hours later than we were supposed to! We checked in and headed straight up to bed for a sleep, before being woken up again at 7:30. We were so tired. We decided to stay in bed and skip breakfast for an extra half hours sleep, then met everyone downstairs 5 minutes late... Oops! Nardeen was there to be our tour guide for the day, so we all got on the bus with her and George and drove out to Saqqara. Here there is the oldest structure IN THE WORLD. It is what the great pyramids were inspired by, the step pyramid. Rather than being a triangular shape like the great pyramids, this one had 6 stepped layers, giving its pyramid shape. It was pretty amazing. We wandered around the area through the palm trees in the super fine sand (which felt amazing), around the ruins and broken statues and ancient pillars and courtyards. It was very cool. And not so many people hassling you to buy things, only a few. When we were finished looking around, we got back in the van. Darren, Sophie and I were 5 minutes late again, so Nardeen gave us 5 push-ups each! Sophie and I quickly got on the van and allocated our push-ups to Darren, so he had to do 15! (And some with George sitting on his back!) When we were all in, we headed into the city and went to the Hanging Church. It's a pretty old Christian church, and it was very pretty. There were ancient ruins of a Roman fortress all around it too. We went inside, and Nardeen gave us a bit of history about the place, and told us why it was called the Hanging Church. It was actually built on top of the Roman fortress, and some rooms had glass floors, so you could see down into the fortress, so the church actually has no real foundations, its just kind of hanging there! The roof was pretty cool too, designed like an upside down Ark. We were all pretty tired by this point after a couple of big days and no sleep, so we wandered around for a short amount of time before meeting up out the front and heading out. Out the front we said goodbye to Nardeen who we wouldn't see again this trip, (but we have her on facebook at least!) and went back to the van. I got an extremely quick snooze in between this stop and the Khan Al-Khalili markets where we got off and went with George over to the stalls. We stopped at a restaurant to use the toilets, (which were disgusting) then left George at the restaurant and went to go for a walk through the markets. When we'd just left, George came back with a policeman, and told us the policeman would be walking with us while we went through, for safety. That was strange, but its more to do with the fact that Egypt are relying on tourists coming back soon, and so they have a lot of security and policemen working to ensure nothing happens to foreigners, in the hope that tourism will pick up again. The markets were very busy, and we got hassled to buy things, but it wasn't as bad as at some of the tourist sights, and the people were really friendly, even if we didn't buy anything. We were looking for a sticker and a bag, but found neither. At one stage we went to keep walking straight as George had told us, but the policemen said no and led us down another street, which was a bit strange, and not very market-ey or busy. There were guys with guns on the streets, who were probably policemen, but we didn't know for sure, so after a bit, we asked the policeman if we could go back, and he was cool with it, so we went back and down the street we wanted in the first place. It turned out to be even busier than the first section and seemed more of a locals market than a tourists one, with traditional clothes and materials and that kind of thing. The policeman (who spoke no English) got someone to translate that to us, so we turned around and headed back down the street we had come up first. The others all bought a few things here and there, but we found nothing for us, so we wandered slowly back up the street just looking at everything, and went back to the restaurant where George was waiting for us. We said bye to our policeman friend and went back to our hotel. We went to the restaurant up the road, Vinnies, for lunch, where I had a pretty nice pasta, and we saw Hani, who was the guy who picked us up from the airport. We had some food and a chat there for a bit, before heading back to the hotel via an ATM, which of course didn't work. When we got back, we went straight upstairs for a few sweet hours of sleep (we were so wrecked!) before we had to meet up again that night. When we got up, we met everyone in the lobby and jumped in the van which took us down to the Giza plateau. We walked to the KFC, and on the way saw the little girl from the other day ("buy from me or I kill you!) which was funny. We went into KFC and went upstairs. We wanted a good photo of us eating KFC with the pyramids in the background, just because it was so ridiculous, but when we got a table upstairs, we discovered we were now in Pizza Hut. So we got a ridiculously great photo of us eating Pizza Hut in front of the pyramids. They looked amazing at night, because they had massive lights shining on one side of them, creating a cool shadow and silhouette effect. Very cool. We had a very quick meal there and got our photos, then headed over to the entrance to the pyramids, where we got our tickets for the sound and light show, went in and got a seat. The show went for about an hour, and was very cool. They projected pictures, writing and images onto the sides of the pyramids, and onto ruins of walls and all sorts of things, while a voiceover told a bit of a story about the history of the pyramids and Egypt. The coolest part was when they projected an image of a pharaoh onto the face of the sphinx. It really gave such a good impression of what it would and should have looked like. It was totally worth it. When it finished, we headed back out to meet Ramzy and George and got back in the van and went back to the hotel. We all got out at the supermarket except for Brit and Nik, so we said our goodbyes to them there, as we wouldn't be seeing them again! They had an early bus trip to continue the tour to Dahab, and we were finishing and staying in Cairo. We got off the van, and went to the ATM, which actually worked! Yay! We still couldn't get enough money out though, as the ATMs have a daily limit they let you get, so we got what we could then went to the supermarket for some water and snacks. We found a new pair of headphones for Darren too, as his new ones had stopped working, then we walked back to the hotel. We hung out and had a beer at a table with Steve, Sophie, Ramzy, George and Hani who was there, and I spent a bit of time getting some photos from Sophie's phone and Nikki's SD card, then after a while, Sophie and Steve went to bed. We hung out with Ramzy a while longer, because we had to wait until midnight to get some more cash out when the limit reset, so we had a chat for a bit longer, then walked down there. We finally had enough money after that and when we got back to the hotel, we paid off our debt to Ramzy, including that stupid local tax we didn't know about, then we gave Ramzy the small tip that we could afford before saying our goodbyes and heading up to bed.
