After our late night last night we just had a stroll around the city today, venturing a bit further out from La Candelaria. The rest of the city was alot more lively than us, every man and his dog/ llama was out cycling, walking or rollerblading! On Sundays apparently cycling is quite a big thing and some of the main roads were blocked off for it. Nathan was just dreaming of having a McDonalds to cure his hangover when he managed to spot the most discrete McDonalds you've ever seen (no golden arches!) down the road and across the street. I'm sure his nose guided us there!
There was loads going on around the city, hundreds of people out enjoying the lively atmosphere. More fancy dress, artists, street food and all sorts. Our favourite was guinea pig racing which was just on the side of the street, there were 5 or so guinea pigs lined up and 20 small coloured houses a few meters in front for them to run in to, the crowd could bet on which hut the guinea pig would go to and the winner quadruples their money! It was so funny to watch and I couldn't believe how the guinea pigs were just sitting there lined up neatly in the middle of a manic street until he prodded one of them to move!
The afternoon was grey and rainy again so we took the opportunity to have a nap back at the hostel. Probably our first lazy day of the trip! In the afternoon we went to Usaquen, a neighbourhood in the North of Bogotá, to meet Ruben and some of his friends who I met last year in Mancora in Peru. They were all so friendly and welcoming, we joined them as they were finishing dinner and then they took us to an 'authentic' restaurant called Crepes and Waffles! We had seen it before but thought it was some American chain. It was really good food, I had a Mexican tortilla which came open with cheese, spicy salsa, lettuce and chicken and Nathan had a mozzarella pitta which looked like a small fat pizza -yum! Laura then invited us to her flat which was really nice! We were introduced to aguardiente, a local drink, and spent the rest of the evening with them. A couple of them had studied in England and had loads of questions for us! They really did make us feel at home and were all keen to practice their English, they especially loved Nathan's accent as they thought it sounded very 'proper' ! It's a shame we didn't have longer in Bogotá as they were keen to show us around, will have to wait till next time.
