We arrived in Hervey Bay around 5pm and our trip to Fraser Island was starting the next day... very excited. That evening we took time to chill, had soup for dinner and brought our goon (that wine again!!) in preparation for the trip.
We were not sure how the groups worked for the self drive 4x4 adventure and it turned out it was a lucky dip with your names being called out. Oh my did we have a close shave! We were originally grouped with a bunch of Danish lads who slyly brought in a few extra members and then when we brought one of our Friends Fran into the group they told us it was too big!!! Happy to move away from them we joined Frans Boyfriends group, which consisted only of boys (why Fran wanted to be with us) luckily there was 10 of us which was the limit and it turned out to be absolutely perfect!!!
We soon named ourselves ' Numero one' as our 4x4 vehicle was number one and we clearly were most efficient loading the equipment (tents, cool boxes, crockery and gas cooker, etc etc) into the top of the car. Apart from the couple Fran and Paul we had 2 guys from London who were also on our Oz bus and 3 Scottish guys who they knew from Thailand, also one Ozzie that always seemed to wonder off!! The banter was brilliant straight away so we knew we were on for a good laugh!!
On the car on the way to the supermarket to get food for the next few days we soon established our roles as us 3 girls made the deal of doing all the cooking and cleaning if the boys put up the tents and loaded the car.... they couldnt believe their luck!!! One wizz round the supermarket later and we were driving onto the ferry.
We were given an itinerary to follow for the trip so we headed out to our first stop- Lake Wabby. The road was soooo bumpy at one point our heads nearly banged the ceiling but luckily enough the lads were safe and all good drivers! Lake Wabby was a 45 minute walk from the car so after this and the scorching heat of the sun we were delighted to see the crystal turqoise fresh water lake.
Coincidentally we bumped into Kelly and Emilia- two English girls who were on our Thailand Trek a month ago- crazy!!!!! so we had a lot to catch up on as you can imagine whilst relaxing in the lake.
Running down into the lake was a huge sand dune that all the boys ran down, second time round Jem joined in and as you can see in the video was a little behind bless her!! Katie was too afraid she'd knock her self out running down there so opted on taking the vid! A bit of banter and a kick about with Wilson the football later and we were back on the road to set up camp....
This first night we camped in Eli Creek- there was only us and another group so nice that it was not too busy. Truely to form as the boys set up the tents us girlies got the barbie on the go and fired up some delicious looking burgers and sausages!! Yummy. The darkness began to set in, the goon was free flowing and before long the guitar was out and we were having a fuel fested sing along! The stars on the Island are absolutely breath taking- the trip itself is actually called Stargazer- but nothing prepared you for it as it literally did look like a planitarium, we never knew there were so many lurking up there!!!
The next day we were advised not to drive until 1:30pm due to the high tide, but did we listen... no! apparently some local Ozzies told the lads the night before it was fine- i'm sure they did- whilst they were downing their homemade bottle of Yager Maeister!! We got stuck. This didnt stop most of us as we left the car in 2 capable hands and walked a few miles to Eli creek down the beach- luxurious swim, it was like a little oasis! We layed in the freezing lazy river and let it take us along the fresh water stream! Certainly woke us up anyway.
Joined by the car later on we then drove to the shipwreck on the Island, not much to say really other than it was very cool and rusty. hehe! The next leg was a long one and Katie was determined to get her go in at driving so we had girly time with Jemma and Fran hopping in the front and Katie cruising along the 75 mile beach... it was gorgeous- the sea on the right and nothing but beach in front of you... very relaxing and nice to drive on- bit of a cheap thrill!!
Indian head is the most northern part of the Island we went to with spectacular views over the shore and a long and tiring walk up to the top of the cliff! It was worth it though as hopefully you can see in our pictures.
That evening we camped by Lake McKenzie, in a more bustling campsite which was good for variation! We cooked the lads a scrumptious spag bol while they played footie on the beach and then we had a similar night of Goon, games and much much larking about!!
The last morning was filled with the visitng of Lake McKenzie which was stunning- bigger than the last its only downpoint was being so busy. Once again bumped into a few people we'd met on the Oz bus and from hearing their experiences/ rifts in the group felt like we were really lucky to all get along so well and have so much fun!! NUMERO ONE!
Sadly it was time to head home, but to top it all off we all met in the evening back at the hostel with what we had dreamed about alllllll dayyyyy long- Dominos Pizza buffet- Oh YEAH!!!! All very shattered but happy to have one last drink to celebrate a great trip we exchanged details and went our separate ways.
This leaves us here, after a very big catch up (apologies for getting them all at once!!) in Hervey Bay. Not much to do here so onto rainbow beach tomorrow - another compulsory stop. We promise from here on out to update as we go, not sure we fancy another 5 hour internet stint anyway!!!!!
