Krys & Toni's World Adventure
Hi everyone,
Can't believe we've left Asia. It already seems like it was all a dream as we're now in Oz where people understands us, they have fresh milk and proper toilets!
Thanks again to the helpful comments from my brother telling me I was right in the last entry- it was too long, and who also responded to my slight homesickness one day by tellong me that was pointless as no-one missed me- cheers!!
Krys and I had a fantastic time on Gili Trawangan. It was one of 3 little islands north of Lombok in Indonesia. You can walk around the whole island in 2 hours, which we did. It was great, as most the island is really undeveloped and there were just empty quiet beaches and nothing else. We also learnt to dive proper and are both now certified to dive to 18m. Krys took to it straight away, whereas I wanted to quit after the first day when I enarly blew my ears up cos I couldnt equalise them and got dragged away by the current. Glad I want back though as I got a bit better and really loved it. Saw the coolest animals, including 3 white tip reef sharks, turtles and sting rays. Very funny at one point when we were near a shark (I wasnt as near as everyone else!) and we all swam on without Krys noticing. It then started swimming at him (they're pretty big too) and he turned round and everyone had gone- think he got a little freaked out!
We also met 2 other really nice couples so had a few nights out which was good- except the evening of the england vs portugal, which we stayed up til sunrise commiserating with the locals. Very funny the next day when we walked along the street and they were all shouting 'hi Toni, hi Krys' and we didnt have a clue when we'd met them. Very friendly island though which was nice after the nightmare journey to get there.
We spent a day on the other 2 islands too, gili meno and gili air for the night. Gili Meno was stunning and deserted. Hardly any people living there. Great snorkelling but I got stung by a mean jellyfish which put me off a bit.
After the Gili's we travelled back to Ubud in Bali with Matt and Kelsey who we'd met on our travels. It's a place known best for it's monkey forest, which I obviously didnt want to go to so wondered if there'd be anything else there! Turned out to be a lovely town with loads of local artists. Went to a traditional Balinease dance where there were a hundered men using their voices as the instruments which was good.
We also hired bikes to go and see some ancient carvings in the rock. I wasnt sure if it was a great idea as it the place we were going was called Gunung Kawi, and Gunung means mountain in Indonesia- doesn't sound ideal for pedal bikes right?! Krys though it would be OK though and the man who hired the bikes said it was fairly flat (hmmm, turned out he was biased in his opinion!). It was 12 km all uphill. Got about half-way and I felt like it was really becoming a possibility I might die. We considered our options and as we really wanted to go still decided to hitch. Went really well! First pick-up truck we thumbed stopped and a friendly Indonesian guy took us and our bikes the last 6 Km- perfect! Way home was ace- downhill all the way. Too be fair, when we got there the carvings were only OK so glad we didnt decide to cycle the whole way!
We spent our last day before flying to Oz in Sarun- a beach town on the south coast. It was lovely but we both wanted to fly to Oz and were excited about that so it felt a bit like we were killing time there really.
So here we are in Cairns! I've run out of time on the internet (found a place where you get 30 minutes free) so will write about here another time.
Good luck with your imminant retirement mum, love ya lots.
Toni and Krys xx
