Kia Ora, from the southern hemisphere, in the land of the long white cloud. (Aotearoa),
We've made it to the other side of earth, down in summer time in the awesome country of New Zealand. We are here for 2 weeks, so wel keep this (relatively) short and sweet to just let you know what we have been up to for the first few days (other than sleep at REALLY weird times... stupid jetlag).
We spent the first few days up north of the north island, in the bay of islands. This place is stunning, even if there was torrential rain..... (which didn't lead to any tent issues...)
Paihia is a tiny little town around 250km north of Auckland, just as you enter the territory of the bay of islands. This place is essentially a seaside resort sitting right on the bay. Tiny little town centre with a few shops / restaurants etc. (and a very questionable 'supermarket') - a real pretty spot with stunning views out over the other bays and tiny little islands.
We camped in possibly the best ever camp site, sitting right on its own beach (see the main pic). We have spent most of the two days chilling, walking, playing frisbee, eating and watching the wire (we love Idris...) and just generally getting into the pattern of not having much to do or any real plans. It feels as though we are finally getting into the rythm of travelling, which bodes well for the next 10 weeks or so.
Highlights include a very animated but harmless campsite caretaker, Bruce's epic 'supermarket' dance, and we may have swam in the bay to the break line after downing half a bottle of Rum (still alive though).
Had a mega time and heading down south next, to continue to camping. We are learning a few lessons in the art of camping well - not to mention tying the outter tent layer in place to stop it from moving (great nights sleep had by all!), BRING BUG SPRAY and make sure you bring suitable footwear to walk over razor sharp stones when you need a pee in the early hours.
Lotta love to everyone back home, and enjoy Christmas in the cold :P
Speak soon, big love
Bruce and Ash
