Day 1 Quebec City: August 27
Quebec City is absolutly gorgeous! It has been amazing seeing all of these buildings and sites that I've only heard about existing. I've seen the oldest building in Canada, the oldest Catholic cathedral, had the best Chinese food I've ever had, and been able to navigate a new foreign city all on my own. The day started with my friend from Australia that is in my hostel room with me going to the super market and getting yogurt and a crossaint. Then we walked around from about 9:30 until noon when she went back to the hostel. So I wandered aimlessly through the city of old buildings, fun tourists and accents from all over the world. I've seen the parliament buildings, the Chateau Frontenac, the Armory that burned in May, cathedral after cathedral. I am loving this. I like my plan of day one wandering around and day two, maing sure I see all of the sites on my list. Tomorrow is all about making sure I get the photos of everything. At night I'll catch the sunset and lights that go across the water that a company puts on. There's a ton that I want to go do.
I like that I allowed myself just two whole days in Quebec City. It is definitely enough. The city is not as big as I thought it was going to be, but holy crap how much am I killing myself for not going to spin the last week I was home? Quebec may be a small city, but boy is it ever a city on top of a hill. There are hills and stairs and more stairs which only lead to more hills. Today proved to be extremely tiring. After sitting on a train for 5 days and not being able to do anything, walking for 12 hours straight with a two hour break in the middle was a drastic change. Tomorrow, if I wake up still being able to move, should be super fun and insightful.
I book my hostel for Toronto today. It seems like the weekend I'm going is super busy. I'm staying in one hostel for Friday, Sunday and Monday night, but they didn't have room for me Saturday night. So, I changing hostels on Saturday and back again. why not just stay in the one on Saturday? Because the other one is reviewed better and is closer than 40 minutes to the train station which I'll need on the Tuesday I'm leaving. A girl from South Korea in my hostel room is going to Montreal tomorrow andis staying until Sunday in the same hostel as me!! How weird is that? So we're meeting for dinner on Friday at 7:00 in the lobby. It's nice to feel like I have another connection there past Fred. Yay for my networking skills.
Day 2 Quebec City: August 28
I figured that I should write a blog, or journal, while I'm sitting in the middle of a beautiful park on Day 2 of Quebec City. I have accomplished quite a bit on the list and just have a few more things left. I went to the market and got fresh fuit and a fresh roll for breakfast after having a glorious shower. After the market I walked around the waterfront and stopped at the Musee fr Civilisation. It was really cool. I kind of really like museums, so this one was really great. They had one exhibit just about the First Nations in Quebec which I loved since I kind of have a soft spot for First Nations history. There was another exhibit that was fascintating!! It was one that was about Quebec throughout the years. There was the original huge crest of Quebec that hung on the gates of Old Quebec City in the 1700's, the original desk of Rene Levesque when he was premier, and current Montreal Canadiens pieces. A short list of the many items, but oh my god, everything in that exhibit was so amazing. After that, I walked in a random square of shops that had this painting on the wall depicting all 400 years of quebec history. Then I took this elevator up the cliff of Quebec City that was made of glass, so I could see all of Quebec City across the St Lawrence River as we got higher. Then I walked to the Citadelle and the Plains of Abraham. It was pretty interesting. It was kind of surreal to be on the Plains where the battle went down and the French really lost to the English. After doing that tour and the museum, I really appreciate the education I've had. I already knew a lot of the history we were being told, but it's aboslutly amazing to be able to place an event with a ladnscape, environment and artifacts. Most of the time, I just felt really smart :) So now, I'm on my way to take a picture of Rene Levesque Blvd, see the oldest Anglican church, buy some postcards, eat some dinner, go back to the hostel and repack my bag. I have to wake up at 4:00am for my train tomorrow!!!
