Alright guys, I slacked yesterday and didn't write about Day 2, but thats ok, I can write about day 2 and 3 in one! I'm a huge multitasker. Alright, so yesterday I walked down to Old Montreal and along the piers at the old ports along the St Lawrence. It was really neat. The way Old Montreal is set up is really different than downtown. The roads were really cobblestoney, like to the point where if you took a wrong step, you could really hurt yourself and your ankle. The streets definitely didn't make any sense. There were any block or streets, jut random streets thrown where ever. There were little stores and cafes and boutiques that just lined the streets and all of the buildings were so historic. The port was really nice. They have different pavillions on the ends of each of the docks, like one dock has Cirque Du Soleil on the end and another one has a science center. It really was just a great place to just hang out...and watch people surprise surprise. So then I found the Point a' Colliere, which is an archaeological and natural history museum. It was different. The museum is built on top of the really old remains of the real Old Montreal, so when you get into the museum you go downstairs to see the original tunnels and swere ways, pipes and pillars and walkways. At the end they found a real cemetary of about 38 males, mainly white and of whom about 75% had died of Iroquois attacks. Upstairs was an exhibit on New France which was mind blowing for me. They had many of the original maps that folks like Champlain used. A lot of museums just have old replicas. They also had a ton of artifacts from archaeological sites, disshes, trunks, cannonballs. Awesome.
After that museum, I went to the Museum of Contemporary Art with the girls in my hostel room. It was pretty different too. I've never been to a contemporary art gallery, so a lot of the pieces intrigued me, or confused me, or both at the same time. There was this one piece thought that was an oversized organ that the artist had manipulated a bit and covered in black and white paint or something. That was probably my favorite piece. Or it was this huge, 12 foot ball, made from welded office chairs. There is absolutly no doubt in my mind that I would put that in my front yard.
By the time I was done trekking all over the city and through two museums, I was spent, we all were. Back to the hostel we went at about 6:30 or 7 to rest and shower before our night time festivities. That night was a lot of fun. We went to a club about a 20-25 minutes walk from the hostel and we put all our bags in the hostel lockers. After sitting and having a couple drinks, I asked the girls who actually locked the lockers and no one had. After a very long debate on if we should go back, we decided it would be best if we did so we could lock it all up. So we did, and then we walked back to the club afterwards. It was a good night. Lots of adventures and fun having.
Then today I went to the biggest farmers market I've ever seen in my life. It took me about 3 hours to get through it all. it was a lot of fun to walk around and watch the locals do their grocery shopping. There were lots of interesting people out there. It was pretty far away from the hostel, so I took the subway for the first time! All by myself and I succeeded, even though there was no tell on the way back and the automated ticket machine was all in French. I win.
Then I came back to the hostel and tonight, I'm going to wander around downtown and go back to Old Montreal to get the sunset and a new journal I saw at a shop yesterday. It should be pretty interesting. Hopefully I won't get lost. I've learned that I have a pretty decent sense or direction. I think its because I have a really good memory. I'm getting more independent the longer this trip goes on. I like it a lot. And I'm feeling the need of a car to be less and less important, even in Bellingham.
