Just wrapped up a couple amazing days in Budapest. Was supposed to be a working holiday, but definitely did more holidaying than working.
A few highlights in no particular order:
1 - Szimpla Kert
Ruin bars are a huge thing and for very good reason. I’m pretty sure I went to Szimpla every day and loved it everything. The old wreck of a building was decked out in all kinds of eclectic/eccentric decor (e.g., bathtubs to smoke your shisha in and garbage pail light covers). So many rooms spread out over two floors so every visit was a new adventure. Also visited Fogas but it was much more of a dancey/party space. Very cool but didn’t love it as much. There are tons of beer gardens and food trucks in the Jewish Quarter which were also super cool. You could be busy for days in that neighbourhood!
2 - Rudas Bath
Thermal baths are also a cool thing. Rudas has a traditional Turkish bath in the basement so I rocked the apron bathing suit and spent the afternoon dipping and steaming. Even got a massage and took a nap in the quiet room to round out the experience.
3 - Architecture on the Buda side
I spent an afternoon taking in the sights in Buda. The buildings around castle hill (e.g., Mathias Church, the Fisherman’s Bastian, and Buda Castle) are absolutely stunning and the panoramic views of the Pest side (e.g., the Parliament buildings) are equally as impressive. I also did an average underground labyrinth tour which was only worth the price because it got me out of the heat and into the cold damp underground for half an hour.
Overall, Budapest was an amazing city. It’s on my “return to” list for sure as I’m sure there is so much more to see and do.
