Next Stop was in Belo Horizonte. We stayed with Lucas’ parent here and I had to wrap up some work while I was here, but still had lots of time to do some touring and try all of the food. Here are a few highlights.
1 - Comida Minera
Minas Gerais is known for their food so I had lots of chances to see why. We ate lots of BBQ and pão de queijo as well as queijo minas and fruit juices. There are tons of bars and restaurants all over the city so we got to eat somewhere different every day and try lots of new things.
2 - Inhotim
We took a day trip to this outdoor museum in the mountains. Words can’t really describe it, so you can google it for yourself, but the mix of jungle, architecture, and interesting exhibits was really something. Too much to cover in one day, but we tried to see as much as we could.
3 - City Things
Here we had the luxury of knowing locals to meet up with and do some low key typical things. We did a big fair/market and the local park as well as a street party and a speakeasy. These were some of my highlights of the trip so far because I got to meet some super cool people and get a glimpse of what city life is like in a different place.
4 - Ouro Preto
We did another day trip to this city not far away from BH. This city was a hub of colonial Brazil because it is where Portugal mined much of the gold that they took from Brazil. There are so many interesting historical places scattered around the steep cobblestone streets. We hired a guide who drove our car around so that we could catch as many of them as possible in a day and it was a very good call.
5 - Lagoa Santa
Lucas’ parents have a weekend house in a nearby city so we spent the last weekend there. It was a beautiful place with a nice garden and an awesome set up for a BBQ. We chilled, ate, had drinks, and visited a bunch of his friends and family here. Great way to cap off a visit to the city.
Next up, we head north for the holidays!
