Kevin, Keith, Tom, and Ryans Voyage
We all agree that Cape Town cannot be summed up in words. It is an absolutely beautiful place with so much to do. We got in late on the 2nd and checked into the Cape Town Backpackers hostel, about 3 miles from the Waterfront. The people here are great and have booked us on all of the activities we've done, including shark diving, wine tours and car rentals. The first day we rented a VW "Citi", a small uncomfortable car with no a/c, no power anything and no radio. It took us about 5 minutes to find 1st gear. It is definitely strange to drive on the left side of the road. We took off for the Cape of Good Hope, the most southwesterly point of Africa and had a great drive down the coast. The coast looks like California on steroids. We took our time, stopping a few places to take photos which are up on the website now. It is hard to describe how beautiful this place really is, we hope the photos do it some justice. The point is actually a protected national park so you have to pay to get in and there are dozens of baboons waiting to greet you at the gate. A five minute drive past the gate leads to the Cape of Good Hope and a spectacular view of the coast of Africa. We then went to the Cape Point, where the Indian and Atlantic oceans meet. Again, it is hard to describe so the pictures will have to do. It was a very clear day and the views are incredible from so high up. We rushed back to Cape Town in an attempt to see the top of Table Mountain, but that would have to wait as we were starving. We went down to the Waterfront for pizza and it was delicious and much needed. The next day, we woke up at around 5:30 to meet the company that was going to take us shark diving. Its a two hour drive from Cape Town to Gansbaai, a world famous spot for seeing great white sharks. After a cup of coffee and signing some interesting release papers, we boarded the Megaladon II and headed out for the 10 minute boat ride to Shark Alley. Before we dropped anchor an 8 foot white shark appeared next to the boat. Throwing in tuna heads and chum brought more and more sharks. The cage is a 5 man steel cage, very strong and sturdy, attached to the boat. We put on 5mm wetsuits to fight the freezing cold water. It was a beautiful day, calm ocean, no clouds and clear water. Getting into the water for the first time was exciting but none of us were scared. We felt very safe and the cage was well built. The sharks are amazing creatures and once in the water with them, it gives you a very different perspective on these creatures. They are powerful and fast swimmers and seem to come out of nowhere when they attack the bait line. More on this a little later as I am trying to upload as many pictures as possible.
