With a population of 23 million, enormous is the best descriptor for Beijing. Its territory encompasses 16,800 sq kilometers. The city stretches from north to south 176 K which is equivalent to the distance between Cleveland and Columbus, Ohio. City limits, east to west spread a full 160 K also. We have spent hours on the bus traveling to our destinations each day. The highways and city streets are in superior condition considering Beijing's climate mirrors that of Cleveland. However, we haven't experienced any potholes here! Unfortunately, the streets and highways are often gridlocked. Beijing's people love their cars! To control traffic and minimize emission, the city government has reverted to a lottery system which grants permission to buy and drive a new car. Every day 1000 new cars begin their life on Beijing's roads. To further control traffic all drivers are required to suspend their driving one day a week. The last digit on one's license plate determines which day of the week you can't drive in the city. Beijing residents have access to excellent public transportation including bus service and an efficient and vast subway system. Taxi cabs are plentiful and relatively inexpensive. Adding to street congestion are motorized and pedal bicycles as well as mopeds. We must not forget the hundreds of pedestrians crossing which adds to the chaos.
