Kerry's Travels
Well we got our visa's today at the Egyptian consulate in New York City. What an adventure that was ! My sister, Steph and I all went (Kelly was in town visiting for the 4th). When we first got dropped off we were a little confused because we expected some official looking building with an Egyptian flag outside but instead we were dropped off in front of an apartment building. We go into the building and look for the elevator because the consulate was on the second floor. We found the elevator but we were told to ride at our own risk because it was broken. So we asked, "are their steps?" and they said NO, so we're like ok, "how do we get upstairs then". At that point a guy leads us back a dark corridor to steps in the back of the building near the dumpsters, so far not a great experience. Once we got to the second floor we arrived at a door with a security camera and a metal detecor, we buzz to get in. Once in the embassy, all eyes were on us ! Not sure they saw women all that often in there, they all seemed to be interested in why we were there. We dropped off our passports quickly and left. As soon as we got into the hallway we burst out laughing, not the smartest thing to do because they were apparently watching us on their security cameras. We were having trouble figuring out how to get back downstairs, so an Egyptian guy comes out to assist us. This is when we realized we were being watched ! Oh well, I guess this is just foreshadowing the adventure we have ahead :-) Now we know to dress very conservatively when we're in Egypt so not to stick out (if that's possible with my blonish hair).
