Its a hard knock life for us....
When I last wrote I spoke of my desire to reach the Athens airport and how much I was looking forward to my overnight in the "Athens Hilton." I must say that the Athens Hilton was very kind to me and I was quite refreshed after my time spent there. Or not.
When I arrived at the airport ohhh around 8-9 pm, my first thought was to seek out my bed for the night. I walked up and down the airport looking for what I would deem to be the least UNcomfortable spot. Because no matter where you sleep in an airport, I dont think anyone can mistake it for being comfortable. Finally I found my spot and did my best to get some shut eye. Unfortunately though, my time spent "sleeping" in the airport consisted of me switching positions....A LOT. I tried "sleeping" upright, "sleeping" crouched on my bag, "sleeping" sprawled over a bench, "sleeping" sprawled out over the concrete using my bag as a rock hard "pillow," and "sleeping" against a wall. Not to mention the airport cops waking me up at 3 in the morning. As if to think an airport is so comfortable that you need to be woken up cause you might stay....Ok, I think you got the point, it was uncomfortable.
But board a plane I did, and at exactly 6:08am I arrived in Santorini airport, after only a 45 minute flight. After finding a taxi cab I drove up to my destination, the Youth Hostel Anna, in Perissa Beach. So after checking out the beach and meeting a few of my fellow travellers, I did what I had been so desperately hoping to do since I had left Corfu. SLEEP!!!!!
That night I was pretty groggy still, but managed to make it out to the patio to hang out with some of the people at the hostel. Everyone was just chilled out and relaxed, which was a nice break from the general craziness of the Pink Palace. It was exactly what I was looking for. I vowed to just chillax in the morning, cause after a couple hours of talking I only had one thing on my mind....more SLEEP!!!!
By about noon the next day I had woken up relaxed and refreshed. I was definitely going to enjoy my second day in Santorini. I ended up going to the beach with one of my Kiwi roomies, another roomie gal from the States, and two Aussies from Sydney.
Well I ended up hittin it off with the Aussies, it turned out they had just lived in Toronto for 6 months recently. We all just sat on the beach, ate some food and watched the passers-by. People watching is always hilarious, and we watched some guy play with a soccer ball for like an hour, trying to do deke moves, all the time thinking he was Ronaldo. I wish he couldve seen himself. But at least it gave us a laugh.
The next day I just chilled with the Aussies again and did more of....nothing. Actually it was quite hilarious cause the Aussies were looking for under the table work there, they were planning to stay for 3 weeks. But they werent really LOOKING for work, were they now. Cause the entire day we pretty much spent at the beach, drank beers, and played quiz drinking games (plus this game called 21 Im soo bringing it home with me). It was one of those days I wish Angelo was there cause he would be a guy that could truly appreciate the moment. Ive had quite a few with him haha. Me and the aussies/kiwis kept sarcastically saying, "lifes hard aint it."
After 2 days in Perissa I moved across the island to the capital of the island, Fira. I wish I couldve stayed in Perissa, it was so relaxed and chilled out, but I already had another hostel booked there. Fira was GORGEOUS though. The cliffside buildings, with the blue painted roofs. Couples were walking around kissing, hugging, definitely a place to go with the missus. You hear that Luke....hint, hint.
I spent my time in Fira doing pretty much what I did in Perissa........more of nothing. I even had a pool at my hostel in Fira which was an added bonus. I just lazed around the pool during the day writing, reading and swimming, and at night I checked out the town.
On my last day in Santorini I took the bus to Oia (say it with me, not Oy-ya but E-ya) to take in the sunset. Oia is known for its sunsets, renowned to be the best in Greece. Well, I must say that news must spread quickly in these parts, cause it seemed that every person on the island was crowded into Oia to catch the sunset. They probably shouldve had some guy walking down the paths yelling "get yer popcorn here, peanuts, 50-50 raffle tixs" cause it almost had that atmosphere lol. Despite the influx of tourists it was still a beautiful sunset, you could see what the fuss was about.
When I woke up in the morning I boarded my ferry to Mykonos. When I got on the ferry I hoped it would be a smooth ride. But I gotta say that it doesnt help your stomach when the guy in front of you is puking his guts out, heaving, all the while you try to think "happy thoughts" so you dont look out the window to see the ocean tossing itself fiercely. Luckily I made it to Mykonos in one piece, with my insides still in tact.
When I got off the ferry I walked through what would resemble a college "walk of shame." No, I didnt get too drunk last night and make a mistake with some muscle armed jock who likes to grunt and smash beer cans over his head, thus entailing a certain "guilty" morning walk. No, worse still I had to pass through the hyenas of hotel owners looking to fill their rooms. I unfortunately needed a room, so I just took the lowest price. But I still felt guilty.
So the last 2 days Ive been holed up in Mykonos. Could be worse (I wish you could see my face right now lol). At 3 in the morning Im headed to Samos, and then hopefully Ill hit Turkey sometime tomorrow. Crossing my fingers.
Peace out peeps, til the next time. This is me leaving....or going to the beach at least.
