"Where and When?" I ask myself. Im on the other side of the world with Brits as my new family, It hasn't even been a week since arriving on English soil and Im already deciding on what European nation to invade.
Iceland, Sweden, Serbia, Croatia please somewhere that isn't overpopulated with tourists! Not a big fan of the Sunshine but he probably wont be making that many appearances during a English Winter, so keep your tan boyo for a bit longer!. "Why not Rome?" hmmmm Okay! Thanks to Fiona's input we jump straight onto the net, find the cheapest return airfare and TADA Im off to Italy for a week in a few days.
Early Friday morning dropped off at Heathrow airport with Backpack, Passport and ticket and know idea where Im staying in Roma = Just perfect!
Window seat and snapping away with the Lumix as we pass over the Alps I still havn't been hit by the "Im in another country" feeling. Im enjoying all the Italian language getting thrown about the cabin and not a single english word in the mix Brilliant!
Setting down In Milan(Stopover) and driving along the runway in a public bus we get dropped off at airport doors and told "don't dawdle or you will miss your other flight" Thinking i shall miss mine I get all in a panic and start doing number 8's all around the place....but the flight to Fiumicino isn't for another 2 hrs..Huh
This time it's Aisle seat my sticklegs are grateful,a small snack, tune into a Italian radio station and we have arrived in Rome. Now the adventure begins!
Get through customs and all that jazz without any problems but seeing the baggage carousels I get a itching something is up. After staring at the conveyor belt for a couple of hours, its time to ask for some help. The Italian woman at the desk is very lovely( not to mention gorgeous!) and makes the situation alot less painful. My backpack has gone off on a lil holiday.
"Can I please have the name and address of the place you will be staying at while in Rome?" hmmm didn't think this one through at all, ! she says they will call or email me with the status on my bag but electronic equipment need charging and my mobile and laptop are looking pretty tired, b*****! (In the end it made the adventure to Rome all the more exciting!)
So with nothing but the clothes on me and my satchel I make my way to the Trainstation( just getting there was a mission up down and all around!) standing with other travellers a wave of calm sweeps over me, stop worrying your in Rome you twat! 45mins later I arrive at Roma Termini( my new hood for the next 6 days) out of the terminal my senses are assaulted, people everywhere, automobiles everywhere my eyes everywhere! Taking it all in I stand there just stand there....wake up! shelter and shower first then you can have your fun! Oakey Dokey Brain!
I basically walk into the first place that has a stars on the sign hanging above. "That will be 85 Euros for one night, You want?" "Does it include a towel?" Offcourse! Okay here ya go! The room is nothing nothing like 85 Euros should look, but it does have towels, 2 of them! Showered and hungry its time to go meet the locals.
Why does that old guy keep staring at me? I wonder as I cross the street. He finally has the nerve to come up and speak to me, more I don't understand any of it, except for the part where he starts touching my chest! Having a shaved or hairless chest I learn means alot of stares and women coming up for a stroke or touch. I could get used to this ;) He ended up buying me a Peroni and thanks to our waiter we had a personal translator and a good chat.
I end up heading to a blue neon sign flashing "Travel Cafe" and welcomed by a lovely Bangladeshi man by the name of Rocky who I shall become good friends with. He seats me down brings out a tall bottle of Peroni and with his ear to ear smile recommends a lovely pasta dish which tastes divine. We have a chat and I mention my situation, he laughs, gets out his mobile and in a matter of mins has a friend appear out of nowhere and Im told to follow, I do knowing what my mother would say (" Don't trust everyone") ohwell when in Rome right ;)
A few mins later Im lead into a laundrymat/internet cafe and shaking hands and signing papers with my passport flashing about. So for the next 5 nights I will be staying at the SunMoon backpackers and its perfect! see trusting everyone does help sometimes :)
Hitting the pillow and turning up the volume on the Ipod, My meeting with the sandman comes quickly.
