What to say about Italy? I love it! It is incredibly hot and humid but I still love it. So far I have been to Milan, Venice and Florence. Although, I only arrived in Florence today. The abundance of amazingly good looing men may bias my opinion a little bit though.
I first arrived in Milan, which is a bit of a marmite city. You either love it or you hate it. I wasn't expecting much when I arrived, as I hadn't heard any good reports about it and I wasn't disappointed. The area around the train station is a bit dodgy and not particularly inspiring but get into the inner city and Milan just comes alive. The people are actually quite friendly and (thankfully) speak pretty good english. The main attraction in Milan is he Duomo. It is a HUGE Gothic Cathedral and really quite a sight to behold. I had a look around inside, after purchasing a new scarf as you are not allowed bear shoulders in the churches in Italy. This, I actually knew thanks to Greta, who had lent me her pink pashmina especially for these occasions. I, of course, completely forgot about it and now have a very ugly brown scarf that I hauled around everywhere with me.
The inside of the Cathedral is vey beautiful and full of amazing artworks. There were massive paintings hanging between the archways and statues and carved little chapels all over the place. Well worth the visit.
Next to the Cathedral is the covered shopping area that is very famous too. It is very pretty and also provides a good passage to La Scala, the Opera House. No going inside here unless I was willing to see the opera but that is a bit steep in Italy.
After wandering the streets for a bit, I headed to the Castello. It is an old Castle just down the road from the Cathedral. For a measly 3€, I got to spend 3 hours walking around this massive building checking out all the old paintings and catching a glimpse of my first Michaelangelo Sculpture. It is incomplete but still pretty impressive.
I had hoped I would get lucky and see the Last Supper fresco but unfortunately you need to book at least 2 months in advance and there is no chance of a waitinglist in case there are no-shows. So I had a look around the church in which it is located.
After Milan, I headed to Venice. It is beautiful and it completely amazes me how this city ever continued to function. Everything is done by foot or boat, it's incredible.... really cool but incredible. The old buildings and waterways are stunning and I didn't mind walking around in 40+ degrees with those views.
