When we arrived in Uyuni we were going to go straight to La Paz but we didn't need to be there for another week (for our Amazon trip) so decided to detour through Bolivia and arrive in La Paz later in the week. So upon arrival in Uyuni we caught a 4hr bus to Potosi, a silver mining city. The trip was via a dramatic mountain pass surrounded by mountains and valleys, although there is no greenery and most of the scenery is earthy and brown in colour. We stayed in Potosi for just one night as it's only attraction is the mine tours which we decided against as they sound claustrophobic and quite dangerous. We tried saltenas in the market for 20p which are Bolivia's version of the empanada (I managed to squirt the juice all over me and drop and smash my phone in the process) and then we met Grace, Irene and Max for a 4 course lunch for £2! After lunch we caught a taxi the 2hrs to Sucre as it worked out at just £4.50 each - the driver drove like a maniac, overtaking on mountain corners and speeding all over the road - luckily we arrived in one piece!
Sucre is a lot bigger than Potosi so we decided to stay there for 2 nights. The white washed buildings and central Plaza full of palm trees are really pretty and it's no surprise that it was declared a Unesco World Heritage site in 1991. There's not a lot to do here so on the first day we wandered around the city Cemetery which is very elaborate and very different to our cemeteries. The surrounding walls have 5-6 tombs piled on top of each other all the way around and some of the family crypts are small buildings.
The food here is similar to Potosi, there's a lot of cheap set meals (we had one that included a drink that tasted like sugar puffs at Condor Cafe!).
We watched the sunset from the rooftop of our hotel one evening and then after some Cuba Libre assisted Heads Up we went out for drinks at Joyride cafe which Kim had recommended.
We were going to get an overnight bus the next day to Cochabamba but the flight turned out to be only £25 so we treated ourselves! (It is our megamoon after all and neither of us wanted to spend 11 hours on a bus)
